Cons of individual decision making and pros of group one

· A group has a greater sum total of knowledge and information compared to an individual.

· An individual while making any decision uses his own intuition and views, while a group has many members, and thus many views and many approaches to a problem.

· Making decisions in groups may stimulate creativity due to the mutually reinforcing impact of interaction among the group members.

· Group decision making often benefits from synergy. Synergy is related to the idea that certain outcomes can only be achieved when a number of people work together in close interaction.

· An individual will not take into consideration every member’s interest, while a group will take into account interests of all group members.

· In case of individual decision making, the decision maker can fail to convey the meaning of a decision, while group decision-making secures better understanding of the decision. The chances for communication failures are greatly reduced when the individuals who must work together in executing the decision have participated in making it. Besides, individuals in the decision group are more likely to be committed to implementing a decision if they help to make it.

The primary criteria for evaluating decision making approach are quality of a decision ), speed (and acceptance or support (A good decision making approach should use the resources of the group to make a high-quality decision. The decision-making process should reflect efficient time management. Once a decision is made the group members should be willing to accept and implement it. The importance of these three criteria varies depending on the situation. For example, in an emergency situation time is essential and acceptance is less important because people are often willing to support any decision.

It is important to use the type of decision-making process best suited to the problem and the specifics of the situation. Not all problems need full participation of group members. Individual decision making is preferable when the issue does not require action from most group members, implementation problems are not expected, the decision is so simple that one person has enough information to make a good decision, or the decision has to be made quickly. On the other hand, if one person does not have all the information and skills needed to make the decision, if implementing the decision will be difficult without the involvement of those who will be affected by the decision, and if time urgency is more modest, then decision making by a group may be more effective.
