Novohrad-Volynsky Specialized Secondary School #11 on the 17 of April, 2002

STUDENTS FROM STRYI GYMNASIUM SAY

Ukraine is one of the oldest countries in Europe. It is famous for many cities and towns and each of them has its own history. Recently we had a chance to visit Novohrad - Volynskyi, located in Zhytomyr Region. This region is one of the centers of textile industry. I must admit, that the town has not so many sights, though there are some interesting places to visit. For example we saw a wonderful fortress. It was rebuilt, but there still remained the spirit of the past years. This fortress is located above the river and from this place there is a beautiful view of the palace, where many famous historical heroes lived. It is necessary to mention that Novohrad-Volynskyi was located on a navigable river, that’s why near the fortress a big bell was built. Many years ago there was a long rope, which connected the palace with the bell. When some ship was approaching the town, it pulled the rope and the bell began to ring. When people heard the sound, they gathered near the river to welcome their guests. Ukrainian culture is famous for its rich and ancient traditions: very often we try to gather as much information about the brilliant names of the Ukrainian talents as possible. So in Novohrad-Volynskyi there is a memorial place of the Ukrainian Mavka Lesya Ukrainka. It is a home of Lesya, where she lived for almost 4 years. Old clothes of that time, pieces of art, books and some of her personal belongings are kept in this museum. Well, I can’t but mention the best school I’ve ever seen in my life. It’s school #11. The Bulgarians and Germans built it. The school is only 8 years old. Of course, the discipline is very strict here; everybody is wearing a gray uniform, pupils must change their shoes, pupils clean their classrooms. I was impressed by a very beautiful gym, which consists of two halls. In some way I saw the school of my dream. Both the administration and the pupils are friendly and hospitable there. I am very satisfied with this trip because I saw many interesting places, and found new friends. But there is a good proverb: East or west home is best!

I remember my visit to Novohrad-Volynskyi with great pleasure. First of all I liked the school. It’s a large and beautiful new building with a big yard. The interior of the school is very beautiful. This school is very clean and it amazed me greatly. There is also a strict discipline and it struck me too. The town is big but not modern. It’s old and many buildings are not restored. But school No.11 and the buildings around look different. When I came there I thought that this school is private and the pupils pay for tuition, but it is not true. I thought that the pupils are very disciplined and don’t do anything else but studying. But I was wrong again. They are very communicative and friendly. We found common interests. So we made new friends there. I must add that the level of school organization, studying and discipline is very high. The teachers are strict but in some cases it is good. As for me I would like to study in such a school but with our discipline. I liked the trip greatly.

My impressions of our trip are very pleasant because I met new friends in another town and I saw Novohrad-Volynskyi. For me Stryi is more beautiful than Novohrad-Volynskyi, because it is my home town where I was born and where I live now. School No. 11 is bigger than ours. It is a new and modern building. The rules in the school impressed me very much. They are different from ours and very strict. The teachers of that school are very polite and I think very good experts in their fields. The children of School No. 11 study English, German, and French. Our relations with our peers from Novohrad-Volynskyi are very friendly. We have their address and maybe our friendship will be stronger soon. We would like to meet the pupils from Novohrad-Volynskyi in our town and show them our school.

Well, as you probably know, some days ago, in the middle of April a group of our pupils and teachers visited the unknown for most of us Novohrad-Volynskyi. During the tour around the town we saw many different places but first of all I paid attention to a big number of playgrounds for basketball. So I asked a PE teacher of School #11 in Novohrad-Volynskyi about the position of local basketball. Thus I discovered that school #11 has a good basketball team, amazing gyms and equipment. Some pupils spend much time after lessons playing this game. Along with a number of boys from that school are the members of the local basketball team. And two years they were the first in their region. They also participate in many international competitions but unfortunately they do not have good results. So as you see basketball has a good development in Novohrad-Volynskyi and especially in School #11.

I like to travel very much. It was one of the best trips I have ever done. My impressions can’t be put into words. I met many new people, visited interesting places. Their school is rather large and nice; the interior is in modern style. Beautiful atmosphere inside kept me in good mood. At first the head master showed us around the school. Then our group had something like a talking hour with our peers from their school. We asked and answered the questions and it helped us to know each other better and in that way we practiced our English. Later we had a disco party with different games. It was very exiting and funny. We became good friends. In the evening we went for a walk. Our new friends showed us their town, some ancient places, e.g. a big bell in the ruined castle. We were walking along the river and singing songs. The next day we had an excursion round the town, and to the old building where Lesia Ukrainka was born and lived for 3 years. Now it’s a museum. My impressions are only good and positive. The school is on high level but has some very strict rules. Nevertheless I’d like to study in such a school with so kind pupils and friendly relations. This journey is very important and useful for our Gymnasium. And we had a great time!
