PROFESSIONAL PROFILE

After earning my pharmacy technician certification from San Bernardino Valley College in 2010, I worked as an extern at a Walgreens pharmacy. The pharmacy manager praised me for my great customer service skills, incredible accuracy, and attention to detail. Unfortunately the pharmacy was on a hiring hold which is why I had difficulty finding work in a bankrupt city. So, I focused all my energy into going to California State University, San Bernardino and with my work as a Paraeducator for the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools.

During my time as a Paraeducator, I worked mostly with autistic children. Many of the students had trouble communicating with others. So, I would focus my time teaching the children the basic phonetics and vocabulary. My favorite activity was reading to the children and the most enjoyable part of my job was marking the students’ progress. I would have to say this was a very rewarding job and this is what gave me my interest in teaching English.

I am confident that as an ESL teacher my passion for teaching and my ability to make learning fun will be of great value to my students.

RELEVANT ACQUIRED SKILLS

Conflict-Resolution, Human Relations, and Leadership Skills:I was a conflict mediator throughout middle-school, so I acquired these skills at a young age. I was given this opportunity through my teachers who were also my mentors. When problems arose among my peers, I would work with them to resolve them. I was coached on a daily basis by school counselors.

Communication Skills: Throughout my general education coursework in college, I took a keen interest in communication studies. I gained the confidence to speak in front of groups of people during my public speaking class, learned ethics in argument in my debate class, and learned language socialization in my gender differences in communication class. These courses made me into the well-rounded communicator I am today.

Research and Planning Skills:Diligent planning is a necessary skill for teaching ESL students. Part of this process involves setting goals for both me and my students and analyzing our progress as we continue to learn and grow. My capacity to plan comprehensively has allowed me predict potential problems and allowed me to react quickly to solve issues. I have picked up on this skill while working alongside instructors and also learned this skill during my TEFL coursework.

Language Skills: My Mother is fluent in Spanish and I studied Spanish in High School and College. Last year, I took an interest in the Russian language and started studying it independently and the local library and online. I tested into Russian II at California State University, San Bernardino and passed with a “B”. I now have a basic conversational proficiency and continue to work towards the improvement of my ability until fluency. These skills are useful in relating to my students language acquisition.
