The outcome in schizophrenia is better in the long term than in the short term. Aging seems to reduce the symptoms. This may be an effect of brain cell loss.

TYPES OF SCHIZOPHRENIA

Depending on the symptoms, Schizophrenia can be of following types:-

· Catatonic

· Residual

· Paranoid

· Disorganize

· Undifferentiated

· Catatonic Type:- The affected person may assume peculiar postures, remain rigid, motionless or does not speak. The person may be agitated and moves around excessively. Facial expressions may be strange. One may mimic the behavior of others and repeat what they say.

· Paranoid Type: - Delusions are common. One may hear sounds which are not present (auditory hallucinations). The person may be aggressive, irritable and anxious. Dysfunction is less prominent. One may be able to live, work and care for him or herself.

· Disorganized type:-The person may have disorganized speech or behavior. One may not have any expressions on face or talks in a dull monotonous tone. The person may have inappropriate or unexpected behavior. Strange mannerisms or gestures occur commonly. One may have disorganization of thoughts.

· Undifferentiated type:-The person does not have catatonia, delusions or disorganized speech or behavior. But other symptoms of schizophrenia may be present.

· Residual type:-Delusions, hallucinations and disorganized behavior are absent. Loss of facial expressions, loose speech and loss of goal directed interests may be present. These symptoms may remain indefinitely, and rarely there may be a complete recovery.

· The diagnosis may start with verifying the medical and family history. Examination of the nervous system is done to assess memory, problem solving ability, thinking and understanding of the person.

Brain Tissue Bank Brain tissue banks have been established to provide researchers with brain tissue for the study of neurological diseases, including schizophrenia. The Canadian Brain Tissue Bank is located in Toronto and managed the Canadian Neurological Coalition.

Usually no other tests may be needed for diagnosis. But if the doctor is unsure about the diagnosis, Computed Tomography scan may be done. Multiple images of the brain are taken from various angles and fed into a computer. A clear cross-sectional image of the brain is generated by the computer. Any defects in the brain suggestive of schizophrenia can be detected. Other conditions that cause symptoms similar to that of schizophrenia such as Frontal Brain Disorders, Encephalitis ( swelling of the brain due to viral infection), and Delirium can also be diagnosed with CT scan.
