A good interpreter is hardly noticed, but is always in demand. Jim Harper

I. Qualifications:

1. Born again Christian

2. Regularly attends a local church

3. Diligent student of the Word

4. Maintains a growing relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ

5. Has a good command of his/her mother tongue and of at least one foreign language:

∙ Extensive vocabulary in both languages;

∙ Ability to express thoughts clearly and concisely in both languages, when interpreting from one into the other.

 

II. Interpreting Situations:

1. Podium, platform, stage, pulpit interpreting.

2. Classroom interpreting:

∙ Presentation;

∙ Discussion;

∙ Asking & answering questions;

∙ Students presenting their class assignments (simultaneous).

3. Group meetings interpreting (formal & casual):

∙ Presentation;

∙ Discussion;

∙ Asking & answering questions.

4. Interpreting for meetings with individuals:

∙ Negotiations;

∙ Counseling sessions;

∙ Conflict resolution sessions;

∙ Conversations (formal & casual).

5. Chapel interpreting (simultaneous whispered interpretation of everything going on in chapel):

∙ Message;

∙ Dramas;

∙ Songs;

∙ Prayers.

6. Written materials interpreting/translating (sight translation):

∙ Schedules;

∙ Outlines;

∙ Exam questions (use the terms you used in classroom);

∙ Exam answers;

∙ Handout materials.

7. Telephone conversations interpreting (make sure you don't take over the conversation if you are not supposed to).

8. Accompanying missionaries en route (make sure the missionary you are working for is informed of every step you are taking or going to take).

9. Other interpreting:

∙ Business;

∙ Shopping;

∙ Meetings with officials;

∙ Food service places:

∙ Restaurants;

∙ Cafés;

∙ Shashlik (barbecue) stands.

III. Interpreter's Ethics (Amplified)

Attitude & Conduct

1. You are a Christian interpreter. Have a servant's heart.

2. Respect the minister who has engaged you and his/her opinion by showing a positive attitude towards him/her and the contents of the message he/she is delivering.

In case of having a different opinion of the message being presented, the interpreter will discuss it with the speaker before or after the presentation.

3. Be under the vision of the ministry, i.e. Christian Camping.

4. Be able to transfer the information without emotional involvement (do not cry when the speaker is crying), yet

5. Be of the same spirit as the speaker.

6. In your workplace and daily affairs, hold the highest of standards in your presentation of the ministry and the Lord Jesus Christ.



7. Be prompt for all assignments.

8. Remain engaged until released by the person you are assigned to.

9. Be neatly groomed and have proper attire for the interpreting assignment (do not go to the Mayor's office in your shorts and a T-shirt as well as do not wear a skirt when interpreting for a sports activity).

10. Working with other denominations than you are, be an interpreter, do not try to change their doctrine. Let's focus on what we have in common rather than on what may bring disunity among us.
