Pre-text exercises

Exercise 1. a). The text you are going to read is headlined “Mechanics”. Guess what it can run about.

b).Think of 5-7 questions the answers to which you hope to find in the text.

c) In pairs, ask and answer these questions

Exercise 2. Mind the pronunciation of the following words:

kinematics ["k(a)InI'mxtIks] force [fO:s]

dynamics [daI'nxmIks] rigid ['rIdZId]

equilibrium ["i:kwI'lIbrIqm] mathematical [mxTI'mxtIk(q)l]

enunciate [I'nAnsIeIt] acceleration [qk"selq'reIS(q)n]

postulate ['pPstjVlIt] frictional ['frIkS(q)nql]

law [lO:] energy ['enqdZI]

motion ['mqVS(q)n] equality [I'kwPlItI]

particle ['pQ:tIk(q)l] momentum [mq(V)'mentqm]

precision [prI'sIZ(q)n] angular ['xNgjVlq]

relativity ["relq'tIvItI] propulsion [prq'pAlS(q)n]

survive [sq'vaIv] mechanism ['mekqnIz(q)m]

Exercise 3. Guess what the following international words mean.

Classical, to balance, postulate, phenomenon, to formulate, to ignore, approximation, planetary, orbital, kinematics, dynamics, conservation, energy, stress.

Exercise 4. Below you will find a list of physical terms mentioned in the text. Choose their Russian equivalents in the right-hand column.

motion çàêîí ñîõðàíåíèÿ
force óãëîâîé ìîìåíò, âðàùàòåëüíûé ìîìåíò
equilibrium äåéñòâèå, âîçäåéñòâèå
law of conservation âçàèìîäåéñòâèå
precision óñêîðåíèå
particle ñèëà
interaction ïîñòóïàòåëüíîå äâèæåíèå, òÿãà
dimension òðåíèå
relativity ðàâíîâåñèå
propulsion äâèæåíèå
acceleration òî÷íîñòü
angular momentum ðàçìåð
friction ÷àñòèöà
action îòíîñèòåëüíîñòü

Exercise 5. The words in A are used in the text “Mechanics” Choose their definitions from B and translate these words into Russian.

A B
rigid the same, not varying in form, quality, etc
vague putting to practical use
uniform to prevent, to hinder
application to say, to tell in advance
framework deep, having great knowledge
profound firm, strict, unbending
to predict that part of a structure that gives shape and support
to interfere not clear or distinct; uncertain

Exercise 6. The verbs given below are mostly used with certain prepositions:

to account to lead to be concerned
to think to center to inherit
to act to deal to derive

to root to range

Find the sentences in the text where these verbs are used. Name the verbs with the proper postpositions and give their translation. Think of your own sentences containing these verbs.

Exercise 7. Match nouns and verbs to form collocations. Use each verb and each noun once only.

to balance intrinsic properties of bodies
to enunciate the science of statics
to predict an important part
to ignore force
to play one’s energy
to undervalue forces
to constitute basic postulates
to determine centre stage
to cancel a state of rest
to achieve phenomena
to hold limits of structures
to sap one’s importance

Exercise 8. There are some words given in bold type in the text. Choose their synonyms from the table below. Pay attention that the forms of the words in the text may differ from those in the table.

to explain significance tough, hard
