PRESIDENT NURSULTAN NAZARBAYEV

Ø Before reading:

1. Prepare information about President Nursultan Nazarbayev’s life and family.

2. What is similar and what is different in the life ways and policies of the USA and RK Presidents?

 

President Nursultan Nazarbayev was born on the 6th of July, 1940, in Chemolgan village Kaskelen district, Almaty. He started his labour activities as a student of a technical secondary school in Dneprodzerzhinsk (the Ukraine) in 1958-1960. He worked as a worker at “Kazmetallurgstroy” and a furnace-man at the Karagandy iron and steel works. Next followed some other metallurgical professions.

In 1967 he graduated from the technical college of the Karagandy iron and steel works iron and steel works and became a metallurgical engineer.

He has got a degree of the doctor of economics. Since 1969 he has been actively involved in Komsomol, Party and Soviet structure activities.

In March 1984 Nursultan Nazarbayev was appointed the chairman of the Kazakh SSR Council of Ministers. From July 1989 to September 1991 he was the First Secretary of the Kazakhstan Communist Party and the Kazakh SSR Supreme Soviet Chairman.

In April 1990 N.A. Nazarbayev was elected the Kazakh SSR President and since January 1991 he has been President of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

On December 1, 1991 Nursultan Nazarbayev became the first nation-wide elected President of the country. on December 10, 1992 the President took an oath of allegiance.

On April 19, 1995 the nation-wide referendum extended his presidential term up to December, 2000, when he was re-elected for the second term of office which according to the constitution of the Republic of Kazakhstan will last for seven years, up to 2007.

Ø Look through magazines and papers to find out the most important decisions made by our President and describe one of them in your exercise-book.

 

Ø Speak on the most interesting and important initiatives of President Nazarbayev.

 

Ø Find out some personal information on the President’s family. What do you know of the first lady Sara Nazarbayeva? About their children? Anything else?

 

Ø Compare the requirements to presidents in the USA and Kazakhstan:

 

‘Vote for me” Game

 

1. Study Nursultan Nazarbayev’s running-for-office program. What issues did he point out in his program?

2. Imagine that you are campaigning to become the leader of our country.

You have to make a speech on Kazakhstan national TV and persuade people that you have good ideas about how to change things. First make notes about the issues.

3. Choose one of the issues and write a short speech to explain your ideas. You can start with a phrase like:

- I would like to talk to you about…



and finish with:

- Thank you for your attention.

Example

I will make sure that all children in this country get a good education by hiring more teachers and spending more on education.

4. Role-play your TV speech in front of the class.

Let your classmates be either your rivals at the election campaign or TV and paper reporters. Some students may act TV viewers watching you speaking on TV.

All of them may have some questions to you aroused by your speech. Answer them bearing in mind the whole program of yours.
