Some Russian Traditions

Every nation and every country has its own traditions and customs. In Russia, traditions play an important role. The Russians are very hospitable and friendly.

We celebrate holidays every month. For example, in January we have New Year, Christmas and Tatyana’s Day, in February we celebrate Men’s Day, in March – Women’s Day and so forth (òàê äàëåå). Here are some more facts about old Russian traditions.

People in Russia have their own special customs. One of them is Maslenitsa – the holiday, which lasts for a week, to say “goodbye” to winter. We celebrate Maslenitsa at the end of February or at the beginning of March. In old times people usually cooked pancakes, had fires, burnt straw figures [stro: ‘figə] of winter, sang songs and danced. Now we invite friends, our nearest and dearest to eat pancakes with honey, sour cream and caviar. At schools, pupils have a performance to remember the old traditions.
