Aim - To consider maple syrup as the national symbol of Canada

Objectives:

Canada is famous not only for its hockey, magnificent nature and Yonge Street, but also by the national symbol of the country, traditional Canadian maple syrup.
The maple syrup is sweet syrup from the sap of the sugar maple tree, red maple or black maple.

The National Symbol of Canada

Maple leaf over 150 years is considered to be the national symbol of Canada. The Symbol of the country is a sugar maple leaf, and not any other. It grows in the south-eastern Canada, where the first immigrants from Europe settled. They followed the Indians, and used sugar maple syrup. In the XIX century the production of maple syrup became one of the sectors of the economy and foreign trade of Canada. In Canada is held annually "Festival of maple syrup."
Maple leaf was first appeared as a symbol in Quebec in the 1830s. According to legend, the maple leaves in 1860 met the Prince of Wales Canadians - the descendants of European immigrants. Since then, it has acquired the status of a national symbol of Canada. The maple leaf is depicted on the emblem of the country and the coats of arms of Ontario and Quebec - the two largest provinces in Canada.

History

Natives of the North-eastern United States and southeastern Canada were the first to produce maple syrup and maple sugar.
According to the results of archaeologists' studies, maple syrup was made long before the discovery of America by Columbus.
Written records date back to the middle of the 18th century. They mention maples growing in Canada, whose juice was used to produce sugar.

The most advanced country in production of maple syrup is Canada. The main producer of syrup is Quebec.

Long before the discovery of America by Europeans Native Americans used the sweet, refreshing maple sap for making beverages, syrup and sugar.
Collecting maple sap is associated with many traditions. For example, in the beginning of the harvest seasons the local villages arrange Farewell of winter. This holiday is called "Cabane à sucre" in French means "Sugar hut." In the immediate vicinity of collecting maple sap residents equip temporary houses (set tents) and tables for guests, serve it with various sweets and juice. This holiday is appreciated by locals. Kids love eating sweets with maple syrup: pancakes with butter and syrup peasant, maple caramel, cooked right there, right in front of people. And adults prefer meat dishes, which are also prepared on the spot - ham with cloves baked in maple syrup, beans with ham and bacon with sweet maple sauce and, of course, rustic beer made on the basis of maple sap.
