Text I. PETROZAVODSK STATE UNIVERSITY

A. Petrozavodsk State University (PetrSU) was founded in 1940. The first rector was Tuure Lehen. In 1940 417 boys and girls entered 4 faculties of the University. The University had only one building and six small wooden hostels.

B. Now it is the largest University in the north-west of Russia. It is situated in 4 buildings, and includes some branches in Kostomuksha, Apatity and other towns. A new university campus is now under construction. The research laboratories and lecture-rooms are equipped with modern facilities. The University has one of the largest libraries in Karelia and the Center of new informational technologies. The main building of PetrSU is situated in Lenin Street. The rector’s office, administration services, and the Committee on Admission are in the main building.

C. The teaching staff of the University includes Academicians and Correspondent members of different Academies, Professors, Associate Professors and experienced teachers. There are many Doctors of Science and Masters of Science among them.

D. The University graduates are highly qualified specialists working in various fields of science, industry, economy and culture. There are many professors, ministers and world-famous specialists among them.

E. At present Petrozavodsk State University has 14 faculties. They are faculties of Medicine, Biology, Forest Engineering, Civil Engineering, Agriculture, Economy, Mathematics, Physics, Philology, Baltic and Finnish Philology, History, Law, Sociology and Psychology and others

F. There are three forms of education. Besides a day department there are evening and correspondence departments for part-time students who work during the day.

G.To enter the University the applicants must have the complete secondary education. The entrance mark is very high. Entry to the University is highly competitive and usually the number of candidates is much higher than the number of places.

H. The academic year begins on September 1st and has 2 terms of 4 months each. The terms run from September to January and from February to June. At the end of each term the students have to pass examinations and tests.

I. Not only young people from different parts of Russia but many foreign students study at the University now. Our students have probation periods abroad and are active participants in the international conferences. Every year the University holds about 10 international conferences. PetrSU takes an active part in international programs and joint scientific research with the universities of USA, Finland, Sweden, Germany and other countries.

Many students take part in the Student Scientific Society (SSS). They carry out the research work andtake part in the student scientific conference which is held in April. The best reports are published in Russian and foreign languages.

The university choir and the tourist club ”Sumpo” are well known in many countries.
