REST AND LEISURE

Read the text and tell what of these activities you prefer.

Leisure time occupations can be divided into four groups:

1) doing things, 2) making things, 3) collecting things and 4) learning things. Of these four groups doing things is perhaps the most popular. It includes a lot of activities, from gardening to sailing and from chess to foreign travel. There are mental or physical, indoor or outdoor activities. Leisure time occupations can be more or less active. But a real hobby is usually creative, individual and unusual.

Indoor activities or home interests:

1) Doing things:reading; listening to music; watching television; entertaining friends; playing games (chess, cards); painting; mending things.

2) Making things:models; needlework (e.g. knitting, sewing, embroidering, making carpets); making music (singing or playing musical instruments); cooking and baking; home decorating and repairing.

3) Collecting things:collecting stamps, postcards, maps, coins, beermats, bottles, tins, old china, statuettes, toys, autographs, books, butterflies, shells, crystals, compact discs and other things.

4) Learning things:learning foreign languages, learning to play a musical instrument, studying music, art, literature or other subjects.

Outdoor activities or activities outside the home:

Sports activities:athletics, gymnastics, cycling, swimming, sailing, roller-skating, rowing, racing, skiing, skating, mountaineering, and climbing.

Playing games:football, handball, volleyball, tennis, table tennis, basketball, baseball, water-polo, golf, badminton, bowling, judo, fencing, boxing and taking part in competitions.

Other activities:gardening; fishing; traveling; visiting the country-side, the sea-side, museums, art exhibitions, historical places; walking; driving a car; watching outdoor sports.

My Days Off

On weekdays I usually go to school, but on my days off I rest. I don’t get up early on my weekends. As a rule at our leisuretime we go in for sports, read books, go to the cinema, theatre, park, museum, disco or computer clubs. We try to spend most of the time out-of-doors. Some people prefer to go to the country to see their relatives and friends. In winter we like to go to the forest to ski or to the skating-rink to skate. After having such a pleasant trip in the open air, you are happy to come home and have a rest sitting near the TV-set and watching an interesting programme. In summer and spring picnics are popular with schoolchildren and students. Children are fond of picnics because they have an excellent opportunityto admire the beauty of nature, run and play games, have a bite in the open air. But the most exciting is probably making a fire. Children collect wood and sit round the fire. As for me, my days off are normally like this. I get up not early, wash, dress, do morning exercises. After breakfast I relax a little: listen to music or read. Then I visit my friends and have a chat with them about our school life, problems or funny events. As a rule, my activities on weekends depend on my plans. But I always try to have a good rest. Unfortunatelytime flies quickly, and the next Monday morning comes, and I’m looking forward to my next days off.
