Positives and the reasons for the existence

Stability

It seems that today’s monarchy still exists because people agree that it is the accelerator and supporter of important features of the state such as stability, continuity and ethics claims MacLeod (2013). MacLeod (2013) observed that it is thought that the Queen brings the entire nation together. People mainly think that the whole nation would have lost a lotif there was no Queen. This is because the current Queen has more historical knowledge and she has seen all this before. One of the interviewees in the research of MacLeod (2013) noted that the monarchs do an important job and treat their position seriously. They try to do their best in the interests of the population. It seems undemocratic to have a hereditary head of state, but if anyone of the monarchs had damaged the country or abused their power, the country would have become a republic very quickly. Hence, it could be argued that the monarchy keeps the UK, as Kingdom state.

Another reason why people want the monarchy to remain was suggested by Easton (2012). Arguably, because people wanted to escape new liberalism which was affecting and guiding the politics of post-war Britain, the monarchy is still kept in the UK nowadays. This could be explained by saying that the country was anxious about how the revolution of post-war Britain was going to affect their economic and social certainty. In that time the monarchy was the ‘defence’ against the scary changes.

Kingdom (1999) also noted that the government needs an official head of state, whether or not it is a monarchy, and added that the monarchy can benefit the lives of people by making their lives more colorful and therefore help to maintain social stability.

Economically good

Smith (2012) claimed that the country benefits from the existence of the royal family in several ways, and the economic impact is the clearest and the most obvious. The royal history and their residences attract a huge number of tourists in the country every year, and the Royal Wedding of Kate and William was estimated to have generated £1 billion for the economy of the United Kingdom, which covers the cost of £20 million by a huge amount. The Royal family also does charitable works across the country and makes up the ‘face’ of the country as a whole.

According to Jacker (2008) the Queen costs less than many presidents all over the world. She costs on 66p per year per person while the president of Italy for instance costs £1.24 what almost twice as much.

Historical features

A blog contributor ‘Donna’(2007) has suggested two main reasons why there is such a desire for monarchy to remain, which are well structured and supported with facts. The first reason is that Britain has never experienced political revolution against the monarchist system or radical political and social changes in country. The only period when Britain had no monarchy was after the English Civil War, though it was for theshort period of time. Another reason is that many states lost their monarchies due to defeats in major wars and experienced consequent imposition of the new constitution. However, Britain has not been on the losing side in its wars and British constitution is un-codified and developed smoothly and naturally over a long period of time.

Jenkins (2011) argued that the Royal family makes the life of the nation more interesting and diverse. He also said that there are plenty of responsibilities that the Queen has to carry out. Monarchs play the role of the face of the nation and all the celebrations and ceremonies organized by them are not easy things to do.Kingdom (1999) claimed that a leader of a party will never be able to symbolize the unity of the nation in the way that the monarch can. Moreover, Dabetwise (2013) mentioned the British monarchy as the main character that makes the UK different from other countries around the world.
