There are eight higher educational institutions in Barnaul and only one of them – Altai State University – gives classical education.

ASU is very young: it was founded in 1973 and had only 3 faculties: of law, of philology, of economics and history. Nowadays it occupies the top position among all the city’s establishments of higher learning. It includes 16 faculties and three researchinstitutes, aimed at providing our students a high level of modern education. They offer 84 specialties for bachelors, 57 branches of research for graduate students, 58 scientific programs for postgraduates and 20 scientific specialisms for doctoral candidates.

The names of the faculties point to the profile educational disciplines which students choose to major in and finally to obtain a bachelor’s degree: History, Economics, Law, Mathematics, Physics and Technology, Chemistry, Biology, Philology, Geography, Sociology, Political Studies, Arts, Journalism and Psychology. Several new fields of study are offered to the students every year, such as Marketing, Management, Ecology, Social Work, Clinic Psychology and others.

All in all, about three thousand new entrants are annually enrolled for full-time, evening and correspondence study. The education process is carried out by 66 departments where 15 academicians, 92 doctors of sciences, 300 candidates of sciences and 551 instructors are sharing their boundless knowledge with 16 300 students on a daily basis.

ASU possesses all modern facilities for study, research and recreation: nine educational buildings equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, reading halls, computer classes, auditoriums with video projectors and audio systems, and the Internet centre. Besides, we have four dormitories, a number of voluminous scientific libraries, canteens, a sports arena for in-door sports games, a botanical garden, “The Universe” picture gallery, a museum of archeology and an out-of-town student lodge for recreation where the students and the teaching staff can have a short rest.

Our Alma Mater maintains close ties of cooperation with various educational centers in Europe, Asia and North America. We participate in several international educational programs. One can see constant progress and development within the extensive system of grants and scholarships from foreign and home organizations and funds. During the past years we have essentially expanded cooperation and student exchange programs with many universities here in Russia and abroad in the sphere of education, business and information technologies.

At present the university administration is cultivating a high-tech education and research community in order to train highly-qualified professionals for Russia of the 21-st century. Authorities encourage students’ initiatives to become start-up entrepreneurs and IT innovators. Our student scientific society seeks to boost the intellectual potential of creative students by providing them with funds they need for their new research projects. The university is becoming an innovation center and a paragon of scientific development in western Siberia.

ASU is proud of its accomplishments and is eager for more.
