Group creative projects

History

Chantiers jeunesse (CJ) is a non-profit organization born in 1980. At first created as a local organization for volunteers from Québec on projects in Québec, we quickly developed international exchanges with French and Belgian organizations. These two countries remained our only international partners throughout the 1980s. However, since 1992, Chantiers jeunesse has gradually increased its international activities and diversified its number of partner organizations in order to widen its global scope. Today, we co-operate with 50 organisations spread in more than 30 different countries. Each year, we send over 100 volunteers outside Canada and welcome around 60 volunteers from abroad and from Quebec on our projects.

Mission

Chantiers jeunesse is a non-profit and non-governmental organization whose goals are to enhance young citizens’ social involvement and motivation, to support community development and to help people reach their full potential. We work with partners from various backgrounds to offer learning and training opportunities based on solidarity and respect of diversity.

In addition to fulfilling these goals, the international exchange program also aims to spread social awareness as well as intercultural communication and understanding between people from different countries and cultures.

Insurance

Chantiers jeunesse provides a liability insurance for volunteers during the workcamp. However, foreign citizens who seek medical attention in Canada are required to pay. For example, a simple consultation with a physician can cost up to 800 $ (aprox. 500 euros). For this reason, the volunteers MUST have a valid medical insurancefor the complete duration of the project.

Alcool on workcamps

Alcohol is permitted on all of our workcamps, except CJ-2016-05 which takes place in a youth summer camp. Camp leaders will enforce a soft “drink with moderation” policy. Use or distribution of illegal drugs will result in immediate expulsion.

Temporary work permit and visa

Some nationals may require a visa to enter Canada. Visas are delivered in the same process as the workpermit and do not require a separate procedure. To participate in our workcamp every volunteer, whatever his or her nationality, must have a valid workpermit.Applying and receiving a work permit may take up to two months.A complete guide on how to get a permit will also be provided to volunteers upon acceptance to our workcamps. This process does not cost anything, but may be long.

Age limit

Our projects are open to volunteers 18 years old and older. There is no upper age limit, however, most of our volunteers are between the ages of 18 and 25 years old.

Camp languages

The official language of our workcamp is English. Camp leaders are also fluent in French and the local population will mostly speak French. MTV volunteers should speak basic French.

Locations

Some of our workcamps are located in rural areas far away from any large city. Be aware that, in these remote locations, you may not be able to return to the city before the end of the Workcamp, plan accordingly.

Campleaders

There are 1 or 2 camp leaders on each of our project. Their role is to help volunteers take initiative and responsibility. They are the main contacts and they make sure the workcamp runs smoothly. The presence of a technical "expert" is left to the responsibility of the local organization. They have a first aid training as well a camp leader’s training.

Group creative projects

All workcamp groups will be asked to create a group project. It’s basically a collective creation to mark your passage in the workcamp, it can be anything!
