CASE STUDY BUSINESS ETHICS

A case study is a specific real-life situation or imagined scenario, used as a training tool. Students are required to analyze the prescribed cases and present their interpretations or solutions, supported by the line of reasoning employed and assumptions made. (http://www.businessdictionary.com)

STEP 1 Preparation. Form a group of 3 students. Read your case. Discuss how you are going to present it to the class. It could be done in different ways:

· you can act it,

· you can illustrate it with pictures,

· you can make a PowerPoint presentation etc.

STEP 2 Case Study Analysis. Analyze your ethical dilemma according to the following plan.

1. IDENTIFICATION: What is the primary conceptual topic? (e.g. discrimination, bribery, insider trading etc.)

2. DATA COLLECTION: What are the relevant facts? Sort out irrelevant from relevant data to develop a diagnosis of the current situation. Identify relevant facts.

3. ETHICAL ISSUES: What are the ethical issues? Identify issues and problems. Think in terms of cause and effect.

4. GENERATING SOLUTIONS: Brainstorm a list of possible solutions. Do not evaluate the feasibility or rationality of each, simply write down a list. Be creative and do not limit yourself to ideas presented in the case.

5. SELECTING THE BEST SOLUTION: After generating a list of wide-ranging possibilities, review your problem statement and identify alternatives that have a direct link with solving the problem. Combine similar suggestions. Analyze the pros and cons of each course of action.

6. AN ACTION PLAN: Select the best course of action and describe it.

STEP 3 Preparation to class discussion. Prepare to lead a class discussion on your case study. Make a list of questions to promote class discussion.

You have one week to get prepared to the case study presentation.

STEP 4 Class Presentation. Students present their case studies, discuss them with the other part of the group.

STEP 5 Case Study Essay. After class discussion write down an essay on your case study. (This could be done as home assignment)
