Overview of Major Assignments

PROJECT I: Summary & Paraphrase

The first major writing assignment is to write a two-page summary of an English article. The purpose of this assignment is to learn and to practice the skills of:

reading critically

identifying claims and reasons

quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing

citations and MLA style

Each of these skills are essential to all research-based writing. Students will use them in all of the other writing projects and the final exam. Skills in these areas should improve with each project.

 

PROJECT II: Analysis

For this project, students will write a two-page essay in which they will analyze the elements of an assigned article. The purpose of this assignment is to learn and to practice the skills of:

analyzing the rhetorical elements of an article

 

PROJECT III: Evaluation

The third assignment is to interpret how a writer’s techniques convey meaning.The purpose of this assignment is to learn and to practice the skills of:

evaluating use of evidence

evaluating response to opposing views

evaluating anticipation of possible reader objections

 

PROJECT IV: Researched Essay

For this project, students will write a research-based argument essay of 4 pages. The purpose of this assignment is to learn and practice the skills of:

summarizing and paraphrasing research materials

establishing a claim

organizing a research-based argument

developing your own argument using evidence consisting of expert opinion, facts and statistics, your own experience and observations (if appropriate to the topic), and your analysis and evaluation of the ideas found in your research

integrating and documenting research sources using citations and MLA format

integrating your own ideas with those of others
