Best Way to Punish Putin? No World Cup

Veit Kuehne

No World Cup 2018 in Russia! Had this thought some days ago - glad to see I'm not alone and the discussion is starting all over the world. Germany should take the lead on this - if our National Football Association DFB-Team announces that the current World Champion will not take part in a World Cup in Russia it would put a lot of pressure on FIFA and I'm sure other nations will follow quickly.

And I love the idea of moving it to the Netherlands - they applied for 2018 and in the light of the MH17 tragedy this would be a wonderful sign of international solidarity. Plus, who doubts that a World Cup hosted by our football crazy neighbors would be 10 times more fun...

Veit Kuehne damn, I should have checked the FIFA World Cup page before I posted this. Look what they just shared:https://www.facebook.com/fifaworldcup/photos/a.608143955868122.153058.606721589343692/959171650765349/ Unbelievably disrespectful (they are even deleting critical comments under that post).
Do we really wanna see this Putin propaganda for 4 years? Do we really want HIM to hand over the trophy? Time to put pressure on FIFA or break it - enough is enough. The international community can organize a World Cup without FIFA.

Tiziano D'Angelo Seriously? Don't mix sports and politics.
MH17 tragedy has to be still investigated. I wouldn't jump to conclusions so fast as Western media is doing. If Putin is considered responsible for this disaster, then also Obama should be, for the involvement in the Ukraine crisis. Civilians dying like flies...

Mauro Guru it's not about loving or not loving Russia, it's about their aggressive foreign politics. I also deeply respect and love Russian culture and people, but nonetheless I strongly disagree with many actual issues of their government.

Veit Kuehne Big sports events ARE politics. Have been at least since Berlin 1936. The cup shouldn't have been given to Russia in the first place. The annexation of Crimea and meddling in Ukraine was bad enough. MH17 was the last drop.

Lotte Birkenbaum Tiziano, I would say not to jump the gun if it weren't for the comments Putin made on the first day after the plane crash, blaming Ukraine for the disaster.

Alyona Kazakova-Wolenskaya Veit, I can't believe my eyes!I thought you are an intelligent guy! MH17 tragedy is under the entire responsibility of the Ukrainian government! Russia has killed no one in Ukraine, and the separatists have struck only military, not Civilian targets! Russia has anything to gain but everything to lose by shooting down a plane!and the Ukrainian government has a lot to gain by accusing Russia! And by the way,if it were not for the United States sponsored regime change in Ukraine, hundreds of people killed would have been alive, including people on the plane! If you personally don't like Mr.Putin,it's your own problem, but it doesn't give you the right to blame my country without any prove and investigation...

Veit Kuehne thanks for your comment, Alyona! This is actually the first thing on FB I read from ANY of my Russian friends here (and yes, I checked all 70 profiles yesterday). It saddens me a bit to see that you repeat the Kremlin propaganda ("entire repsonibility of the Ukrainain government" "Russia has killed no one in Ukraine" "separatists have struck no civilian targets" "Russia has nothing to gain" "sponsored regime change"). I wasn't blaming your country at all, I never will - in fact I pity many of my Russian friends for having to live under Putin's dictatorship, no free press, dreadful perspectives for the future. I love Russia and Russian culture. Let's hope there will be a way to solve the Ukrainian crisis, remove Putin from power and open up a way for a bright future for Russia. It's not gonna happen with Putin, that's for sure.

Veit Kuehne also, as to "prove and investigation" - time has passed for that. No matter if there will ever be absolute proof who pulled the trigger and shot down the plane (the "separatists" - I don't like that term since their leaders are from MOSCOW! showed how little they cared abouts securing the site, treating the dead with respect; Putin immediately blamed Ukraine - with similar words as you - even though the plane was shot down in a territory where HE probably has more control than the Kiev government). It's now a political question. Putin wanted and wants to destabilize Ukraine to follow his stupid imperialistic "let's rebuild USSR and Russian glory" dream. He invaded and annexed Crimea. He gave weapons to the "separatists" and didn't close the border to the war zone. It's his war, he bears all political responsibilty...no matter who "has something to gain or not". In all likelihood it was a stupid mistake by some stupid "separatist". Things like that happen in wars. Putin is responsible.

Alyona Kazakova-Wolenskaya Dear Veit, you will be very surprised to know that Putin's approval rating in Russia now has never been higher: 83% of my compatriots approve of his policy! We all respect him!!!Crimea is historically and ethnically Russian, and the word "invasion" is not appropriate here at all!If you followed the news,97% of the local population voted for integration into the RF during referendum in March..

Ìàêñèì Ïðîäàí Do you really think that was normal referendum? With a lot of Russian troops and "self-defense". And they have calculated it for 2 days, damn they are so quick! I wish I could so

Veit Kuehne yes, his approval ratings are shocking. Fortunately, I have many Russian friends who do not support him...there is hope for the future. Crimea being historically and ethnically Russian is nonsense of course, ask the Crimean Tatars what they think about...See More

· Veit Kuehne I'm always talking to real people and hardly watch TV Crimean Tatars were brutally deported by Stalin and returned in the 90s, they have a right to be there. Imagine what it must feel like for them now, Russian occupation, their leader (who has spent years and years in Communist prisons) banned from his homeland... And we both know that Sevastopol is a very special city, so no surprise people there would support the illegal annexation.

Ìàêñèì Ïðîäàí Vitaly Churkin, Russia's ambassador to the United Nations, was asked Monday about different intercepted recordings, purportedly of pro-Russian rebels talking about shooting down a plane. Churkin suggested that if they did, it was an accident.
"According to them, the people from the east were saying that they shot down a military jet," he said. "If they think they shot down a military jet, it was confusion. If it was confusion, it was not an act of terrorism."

Veit Kuehne another good article on the topic. "So any response has to make him hurt, personally; it has to puncture his ego, his pride. And one certain way to hurt him would be to strip from Russia the right to host the 2018 World Cup."http://www.thedailybeast.com/.../best-way-to-punish-putin...

Peter Althaus Veit As much as I understand your point. I think if you really wanna punish Russia the World Cup should be held as planned. It will be the most expensive ever and the only companies benefitting are the American ones. That's way better than any sanctions. And if Germany becomes World Champion in Russia - even better!

21 hours ago · Like

·

Veit Kuehne that's the point - not punish Russia, but punish Putin! Yes, it will be the most expensive ever, and just like with Sochi (which were also the most expensive games ever) Putin and his cronies will find ways to channel billions and billions of the budget supposedly used for the games to themselves. Precisely because of this corruption Russians should actually also oppose the World Cup and having the money that Russia badly needs for many other things taken away from them...
