Characters:

In the story Vera is the most active characters and she is the master story teller. At the end of the story she makes the readers confused.

In The Open Window, A new neighbor named Frampton Nuttel visits a young girl named Vera who entertains him with a ghost story of her aunts’ life. When he observes the "ghost" he leaves in a fright and we find out the girl (Vera) is just very good at making story. Frampton Nuttel is suffering from nervous problems and trying to spend some time in the countryside of Britain. In that storey the readers were in confusion until the last part was read. I really disliked the point that the readers did not understand the flow of the storey. However, it is also awkward that Vera was lying and confusing Nuttel when he has come to her to cure his nervous problem. On the other way, I liked the storey, as it has a very strong effect in the readers and they must be involved until it is not finished. It is one of those short stories, where one or two characters make the story a successful one.

A Day's Wait" is a short story by Ernest Hemingway published in his 1933 short story collection Winner Take Nothing about a nine-year-old boy who is sick during a cold winter.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

The story focuses on the boy and his father who calls him Schatz (German, meaning darling). When the boy gets the flu, a doctor is called in and recommends three different medicines and tells the boy's father that his temperature is 102 degrees Fahrenheit. He is very quiet and depressed, finally asking when he will die; he had thought that a 102 degree temperature was lethal because he heard in France (where Celsius is used) that one cannot live with a temperature over 44 degrees. When the father explains to him the difference in scales, the boy slowly relaxes, and the next day, "he cried very easily at little things that were of no importance."

The story mainly signifies the boy's misunderstanding leading to many changes in his own mind.

In this short story as I mention before, full of dialogue, it seems like the dialogue in drama which is theliterary genre that is most like naturally occurring conversation. But they are written to be spoken. it isprepared and fresh. Hemingway adopts this style of dialogue aim to make reader read aloud, and get theirmeaning and changing emotion from their sounds, change as two protagonists changed. In this story, themost characteristic of ordinary conversation occur frequently or normally in our life, nothing more detail anddirect emotion can be expressed than these dialogues. The author choose to convey a feeling that thestory may happen in our life, but none of us will deal with as bravely as the nine years boy does, to make

the characters‟ speech casual, so as to reflect the story of everyd

ay life. For example,"How do you feel, Schatz?" I asked him."Just the same, so far," he said.

This dialogue happen when father take care of his son in every family, to show father‟s great love.Readers can feel that father‟s love similar to their daily

.

Symbolize

Hemingway use many symbolize to present the image of a tough boy. Readers can easily found that footof bed occurs four times, the boy stare at the foot of bed straightly. Not until the misunderstanding solve

does he “relaxed slowly”.

What the foot means? There are two meanings here. First, the Azalea alwayscomes from the foot of bed to rob human life. The boy want to keep awaken in order to face directly to himwhich show his stoic and heroism as the theme present. The other meaning is more abstract, father just siton the foot of bed, such a closer distant between father and son, but there exist a great gulf andmisunderstanding.

Another symbolize thing is the book father read to his son, name” Howard Pye's Book of Pirates”. Thes

ebooks also reveal the brave heroes who adventures and facing many difficulties, finally overcome them. There are many similar spirits between son and the hero of this book. Perhaps father want to readsomething to encourage his son to fight against the flu, while to the son, it means how to face death withoutscared and receive death in a awaken statement.

Conclusions

According to the study based on stylistics we can find: language in this short story simple and brief, however it is full of vivid images and imagination. Not only to strengthen readability, but also unite all partwith the theme, embed all hints in lines for developing content. Words repetition and content coherence

lead to misunderstanding occur, and dialogs represent Hemingway‟s w

riting style, meanwhile emphases

character‟s personality. The author of this paper analyze the short story in a simple way, there exist many

thing to analyze in stylistics
