B ... then align the rotor with the key and install it on the shaft

in the rotor with the Woodruff key (see illustration).

13 Apply a drop of clean engine oil to the threads of the rotor bolt, then install the bolt and washer and tighten the bolt to the torque setting specified at the beginning of this Chapter, using the method employed on removal to prevent the rotor from turning (see illustration 32.9a).

14Install the left-hand engine cover (see Chapter 2, Section 13).

15 Refill the engine with oil to the correct level (see Daily (pre-ride) checks).

16Feed the alternator wiring back to its connector, making sure it is correctly routed, and reconnect it (see Steps 5 and 2).

33 Regulator/rectifier-

check and replacement

nmm
hint

Clues to a faulty regulator are constantly blowing bulbs, with brightness varying considerably with engine speed, and battery overheating.

Check

1Remove the left-hand frame side panel (see Chapter 8). The regulator/rectifier is mounted on the left-hand side of the frame (see illustration).

33.1 The regulator/rectifier

2Disconnect the wiring connector, then connect the multimeter positive (+ve) probe to the red/white terminal and the negative (-ve) probe to the green terminal on the wiring connector and check for voltage with the ignition switched ON. Full battery voltage should be present. Switch the ignition OFF.

3 Switch the multimeter to the resistance (ohms) scale. Measure the resistance between each of the yellow wire terminals on the wiring connector, taking a total of three readings. If the stator coil windings are in good condition (see Section 32)and the wiring between the alternator and the rectifier is good, the three readings should be within the range shown for stator coil resistance in the Specifications at the start of this Chapter.

4 Check for continuity between the green terminal of the wiring connector and earth (ground) on the frame. There should be continuity.

5 If the above checks do not provide the specified results, check the wiring between the battery, regulator/rectifier and alternator (see the wiring diagrams at the end of this Chapter).

6 If the wiring is good, test theregulator/rectifier unit. Remove the regulator/rectifier from the motorcycle (see Step 7) and use a multimeter set to the appropriate scale to check the resistance between the various terminals on theregulator/rectifier (see illustration). If thereadings do not compare closely with those shown in the accompanying table the regulator/rectifier unit must be renewed,

although you are advised to have your findings confirmed by a Honda dealer before doing so.

Note:The use of certain multimeters couid lead to false readings being obtained, as could a lowbattery in the meter andcontact between the meter probes and your fingers when the meter is in use. Honda recommend the use of Sanwa or Kowa analogue type multimeters.

Replacement

7 Disconnect the battery negative (-ve) lead. Unscrew the two bolts securing the regulator/rectifier and remove it. noting the earth wire secured by the bottom bolt. Disconnect the wiring plug from the regulator/rectifier.

8 To install the regulator/rectifier, ensure that the terminals in the connector are clean and connect it to the unit. Install the mounting bolts with the earth wire on the bottom boh and tighten the bolts securely.

9 Install the left-hand frame side panel (see Chapter 8). Reconnect the battery negative lead.
