Neutral switch wiring connector (arrowed)

Sidestand switch wiring connector (arrowed)

Sidestand switch bolt (arrowed)

2If the neutral warning light does not come on when the ignition is turned ON with the transmission in neutral, detach the wiring connector and earth (ground) the wire on the crankcase (see illustration). If the light comes on, the switch is defective and must be renewed.

3 If the light does not come on, check for voltage at the connector and check the wire for continuity between the connector, diode (see Section 23), instrument cluster and fusebox (see the wiring diagrams at the end of this Chapter). Also check the warning light bulb (see Section 17), and the tail light, signal, brake light, horn circuit fuse (see Section 5).

4 If the warning light does not extinguish when a gear is selected and the ignition is ON, detach the wiring connector. If the light goes out, the switch is defective and must be renewed. If the light remains on, the wire between the connector and instrument cluster must be earthed (grounded) at some point.

Removal

5 Remove the sprocket cover and chain guide and detach the wiring connector from the switch (see illustration 20.2).

6Unscrew the switch and withdraw it from the engine casing.

Installation

7 Apply a smear of sealant to the threads of the switch, taking care not to cover the contact point.

8 Install the switch, tighten it to the torque setting specified at the beginning of this Chapter, then reconnect the switch wire.

9 Check the operation of the neutral light.

10 Install the chain guide and sprocket cover.

21Sidestand switch -

check and replacement jx

Note:The sidestand switch is part of the safety circuit which prevents the engine from starting with the transmission in gear unless the clutch lever is pulled in and the sidestand is up, and prevents the engine from running with the sidestand down unless the transmission is in neutral.

Check

1The sidestand switch is mounted on the back of the sidestand.

2 Sit astride the motorcycle and start the engine with the sidestand up and the transmission in neutral. Pull the clutch lever in and engage first gear, then lower thesidestand; the engine should stop.

3 To check the operation of the switch using an ohmmeter or continuity test light, place the motorcycle on its centre stand, remove the left-hand frame side panel (see Chapter 8) and trace the wiring back from the switch to the green 3-pin connector and disconnect it (see illustration).Connect the meter to the green/white and green wires on the switch side of the connector. With the sidestand up there should be continuity (zero resistance) between the terminals, and with the stand down there should be no continuity (infinite resistance). Now connect the meter to the yellow/black and green wires on the switch side of the connector. With the sidestand down there should be continuity (zero resistance) between the terminals, and with the stand up there should be no continuity (infinite resistance).

4 If the switch fails either or both of these tests it is defective and must be renewed.

5 If the switch is good, check the wiring between the various components in the starter safety circuit (see the wiring diagrams at the end of this Chapter).

Replacement

6 Place the motorcycle on its centre stand. Remove the front sprocket cover and chain guide and the left-hand frame side panel (see Chapter 8). Trace the wiring back from the switch to the green 3-pin connector and disconnect it (see illustration 21.3).Work back along the switch wiring, freeing it from any relevant retaining clips and ties, noting its correct routing.

7 Unscrew the switch bolt and remove the switch from the stand, noting how it fits (see illustration).

8Locate the tab on the inside of the new switch in the hole in the sidestand and align the switch body with the stand spring post (see illustration 21.7).Tighten the bolt to the

torque setting specified at the beginning of this Chapter.

9 Make sure the wiring is correctly routed up
to the connector and retained by all the
necessary clips and ties.

10 Reconnect the wiring connector and check the operation of the sidestand switch (see Step 2).

11 Install the chain guide and sprocket cover, and frame side panel (see Chapter 8).

22 Clutch switch -

check and replacement .

Note:The clutch switch is part of the safety circuit which prevents the engine from starting with the transmission in gear unless the clutch lever is pulled in and the sidestand is up, and prevents the engine from running with the sidestand down unless the transmission is in neutral.

Check

22.2 Disconnect the wiring connectors (arrowed)

1 The clutch switch is housed in the clutch lever bracket.

2 To check the switch, disconnect the wiring connectors from the switch (see illustration).Connect the probes of an ohmmeter or a continuity test light to the two switch terminals. With the clutch lever pulled in, continuity should be indicated (zero resistance). With the clutch lever out, no continuity (infinite resistance) should be indicated. Reconnect the wiring connectors.
