nut and tighten the nut securely. Fit a new split pin.

Install the brake rod pin in the brake arm, Install the rod through the pin with the spring forward of the brake arm, and screw the adjuster nut onto the rod. Adjust the rear brake (see Chapter 1).

Check the operation of the rear brake before riding the motorcycle.

Removal

Position the motorcycle on its centre stand so that the wheel is off the ground

Unscrew the axle nut and remove the nut and the special cranked washer.

Support the wheel then withdraw the axle and lower the wheel to the ground.

Disengage the chain from the sprocket and remove the wheel from the swingarm.

Remove the spacers located on each side of the wheel for safekeeping, noting how they fit.

Note how the lug on the caliper bracket locates in the socket on the swingarm. Displace the caliper bracket from the swingarm and secure it to the frame with a cable tie, making sure no strain is placed on the hose. Note:Do not operate the brake pedal while the caliper is off the disc. Caution: Don't lay the wheel down and allow it to rest on the disc or the sprocket -they could become warped. Always lay the wheel down with wood blocks under the rim to protect the disc and sprocket and prevent dirt entering the hub.

If necessary, withdraw the chain tensioner assemblies from the ends of the swingarm (see Chapter 6).

Check the axle for straightness by rolling it on a flat surface such as a piece of plate glass (if the axle is corroded, first remove the corrosion with wire wool). If the equipment is available, place the axle in V-blocks and check the runout using a dial gauge. If the axle is bent or the runout exceeds the limit specified at the beginning of this Chapter, renew it.

Refer to Section 17 if wheel bearing renewal is required,

Installation

Apply a thin coat of grease to the axle, and also to the inside of the grease seals and the wheel spacers. If removed, slide the chain tensioner assemblies into the ends of the swingarm.

Manoeuvre the wheel between the ends of the swingarm and engage the chain on the sprocket.

Engage the lug on the brake caliper bracket with the socket on the swingarm. Fit the headed spacers into the grease seals and lift the wheel into position, ensuring the brake disc locates squarely between the pads in the caliper (see illustration).Make sure the spacers and caliper bracket remain in place and install the axle. Check that the axle has passed through the chain adjusters, spacers and caliper bracket.

Fit the cranked washer and hand tighten the axle nut. Check the chain tension (see Chapter 1) and then tighten the nut to the specified torque setting, counter-holding the axle head on the other side of the machine.

Operate the brake pedal several times to bring the pads into contact with the disc.

Check the operation of the rear brake before riding the motorcycle.
