Rear drum brake (R and T

models)- removal, inspection ^,

and installation ^

Removal

1 Inspect the rear brake wear indicator (see Chapter 1, Section 3).

2 Remove the rear wheel (see Section 16) and lift out the brake backplate.

3 Unscrew the brake arm pinch bolt and remove the arm from the brake camshaft, noting the alignment punchmark (see illustration).

4Remove the brake wear Indicator, noting how the wide spline aligns with the wide groove on the shaft, and the felt seal.

5 Mark the brake shoes to aid reassembly; if they are not going to be renewed they must be installed in their original positions. Note the position of the brake springs; the black spring

fits next to the brake cam, the blue spring fits next to the shoe pivot posts. Note also that the open ends of the springs face away from the backplate. Mark the end of the brake cam to aid reassembly (see illustration).

6Remove the split pins from the shoe pivot posts, remove the plate, and pull the shoes off the backplate together with the brake cam (see illustration).

7Fold the shoes towards each other to release the spring tension and separate the shoes (see illustration).

Inspection

8 Check the linings for wear, damage and signs of contamination from road dirt or water. If the linings are visibly defective, renew them.

9 Measure the thickness of the lining material (just the lining material, not the metal backing) and renew the shoes if the linings are worn below the minimum specified at the beginning of this Chapter at any point (see illustration).

10Check the ends of the shoes where they contact the brake cam and the pivot posts. Renew the shoes if there's visible wear.

11Check the lugs on the shoes where the springs locate for wear. Also make sure that the springs are not stretched and that the hooked ends are not deformed.

12Clean all old grease from the pivot posts and the brake cam and check them for wear. Also clean any old grease from the cam pivot hole in the backplate and check that the cam is a good fit in the hole.

13 Check the inside of the brake drum for wear or damage. Measure the inside diameter

of the drum at several points with a vernier caliper. If the measurements are uneven (indicating that the drum is out-of-round) or if there are scratches deep enough to snag a fingernail, have the drum turned (skimmed) to correct the surface. If the wear or damage cannot be corrected within the service limit specified at the beginning of this Chapter, the wheel must be renewed.

Installation

Caution: Do not apply too much grease otherwise there is a risk of it contaminating the brake drum and shoe linings.

14Apply a smear of copper-based grease to the shaft of the brake cam and to the cam faces, and to the lugs on the shoes where the springs locate. Hook the springs into the shoes (see Step 5), position the shoes in aV on the brake cam (refer to Step 5 for the correct position of the cam), then fold the shoes down into position. Make sure the ends of the shoes fit correctly in the cam.

15Apply a smear of copper-based grease to the pivot posts; locate the shaft of the brake cam in the hole in the backplate and lower the shoe assembly into place, spreading the shoe ends to fit them on the pivot posts. Install the plate on the pivot posts and fit new split pins, bending the ends securely (see illustration).

16Lubricate the brake shaft felt seal sparingly with clean engine oil and install the brake wear indicator on the shaft splines with the pointer facing the brakeplate. Align the punch mark on the brake arm with the mark
