27Fit a new O-ring to the fork top bolt and
thread the bolt into the top of the fork tube.

A Warning: It will be necessary to compress the spring by pressing it down with the top bolt in order to engage the threads of the top bolt with the fork tube. This is a potentially dangerous operation and should be performed with care, using an assistant if necessary. Wipe off any excess oil before starting to prevent the possibility of slipping.

Keep the fork leg fully extended whilst pressing on the spring. Screw the top bolt carefully into the fork tube making sure it is not cross-threaded. Note:The top bolt can be tightened to the specified torque setting when the fork has been installed in the bike and is securely held in the bottom yoke.

8 Steering stem -

removal and installation

Removal

Caution: Although not strictly necessary, before removing the forks It is


recommended that the fairing (SW, SX and SY models) and radiator side panels (R, T, V, W, X and Y models) are removed (see Chapter 8). This will prevent accidental damage to the paintwork.

1 Remove the front fork legs (see Section 6).

2 Unscrew the bolt securing the front brake hose clamp to the bottom yoke and remove Ihe clamp. On SW, SX and SY models. disconnect the wiring connectors to the horn and at the same time and remove the horn, bracket and hose clamp (see illustration).

3Depending on the tools available, the handlebars may limit access to the steering stem nut. If necessary, remove the handlebar clamps and move the bars forward (see Section 5). Unscrew and remove the steering stem nut using a socket or spanner, and remove the washer (see illustrations).Lift the top yoke off the steering stem and place it aside, making sure no strain is placed on the ignition switch wiring.

4 On R, T, V, W, X and Y models, the headlight and turn signal assembly locates in sockets in the top and bottom yoke. Lift the assembly clear of the bottom yoke, making sure the mounting bushes are secure on the four ends of the assembly stays (see illustration).

5Prise the lockwasher tabs out of the notches in the locknut (see Chapter 1, Section 19). Unscrew the locknut using either
