Ensure circlip (arrowed) locates correctly in its groove

If removed, press the caged ball bearing onto the right-hand end of the shaft.

18Slide the thrust washer onto the left-hand end of the shaft, followed by the 5th gear pinion bush, aligning the oil hole in the bush with the hole in the shaft, and the 5th gear pinion, with the pinion dogs facing away from the integral 1 st gear (seeillustrations). Slide the splined washer onto the shaft, then fit the circlip, making sure that it locates correctly in the groove on the shaft (see illustrations).

19Slide the combined 3rd/4th gear pinion onto the shaft with the larger 4th gear pinion facing the 5th gear pinion. Ensure the oil hole in the pinion aligns with the oil hole in the shaft (see illustration).Fit the circlip, making sure it is locates correctly in its groove on the shaft (see illustration).

21Slide the slotted splined washer onto the shaft and locate it in its groove, then turn it in the groove so that the splines on the washer align against the splines on the shaft and secure the washer in the groove. Slide the lock washer onto the shaft so that the tabs on the lockwasher locate in the slots on the outside edge of thesplined washer (see illustrations).

22Slide the 2nd gear pinion and the thrust washer onto the shaft (see illustrations).

Check that all components have been correctly installed (see illustration 29.1a).

23Fit the needle roller bearing and its
cage over the end of the shaft (see

Disassembly

24Remove the caged ball bearing from the
right-hand end of the shaft, referring to Tools
and Workshop Tips
(Section 5) in the
Reference Section if required (see illustration
29.40).
Slide the thrust washer off the shaft,
followed by the 1st gear pinion and its needle
roller bearing, the thrust washer and the 5th

gear pinion (see illustrations 29.39c, b and a, and 29.38b and a).

25Remove the circlip securing the 4th gear pinion, then slide the splined washer, the pinion and its splined bush off the shaft (see illustrations 29.37d, c, b and a).

26Slide the lockwasher off the shaft. Note how the tabs on the lock washer fit into the slotted splined washer. Turn the slotted splined washer to align ft with the splines on the shaft and slide it off the shaft (see illustration 29.36b and a).

27Slide the 3rd gear pinion and its splined bush, followed by the splined washer, off the shaft (see illustration 29.35c, b and a).
