Note the alignment of the punchmark (arrowed) before removing lever

19.4a Ends of the gearchange shaft return spring (A) and gearchange cam (B)

11Fit new O-rings onto the oil pipe and smear them with clean oil, then push the pipe into its sockets in the crankcase (see Step 4),

12Fit a new packing collar onto the oil strainer and smear it with clean oil, then align the tab on the strainer with the notch in the crankcase and push the strainer into its socket (see illustration).

13Lay a new gasket onto the sump (if the engine is in the frame) or onto the crankcase (if the engine has been removed and is positioned upside down on the work surface) (see illustration).Make sure the holes in the gasket align correctly with the bolt holes.

14Position the sump onto the crankcase and install the bolts finger-tight. Tighten the bolts evenly in a criss-cross pattern, noting that the centre bolts at the front and rear, next to the cast arrows, should be tightened first (see illustration 18.2a).

15Install the oil drain plug with a new sealing washer.

16 Refill the engine with oil (see Chapter 1). Start the engine and check that there are no leaks around the sump.

removal, inspection and installation

Note:The gearchange mechanism (external components) can be removed with the engine in the frame.

Removal

19.4b Gearchange shaft thrust washer (arrowed)

1 Make sure the transmission is in neutral. Remove the clutch (see Section 15). There is no need to remove the oil pump drive chain and sprockets.

2 Unscrew the gearchange lever pinch bolt and remove the lever from the shaft, noting the alignment punchmark (see illustration). If no mark is visible, make your own before removing the lever so that it can be correctly aligned with the shaft on installation.

3 Wrap some insulating tape around the gearchange shaft splines to avoid damaging the oil seal as it is removed.

4 On the right-hand side of the engine, note how the gearchange shaft return spring ends fit oneach side of the locating pin in thecasing, and how the shaft selector arm pawls engage with the pins on the selector cam (see illustration).Withdraw the gearchange shaft and its thrust washer from the casing (see illustration).

5Note where the ends of the gearchange stopper arm return spring locate and how the roller on the arm rests in the neutral detent on the selector cam (see illustration).Unscrew the bolt securing the stopper arm and withdraw the arm, thrust washer and spring from the casing (see illustration).

Inspection

6 Inspect the stopper arm return spring and
the gearchange shaft return spring. If they are
fatigued, worn or damaged they must be
renewed. The shaft return spring is retained
