Preface

English for future HR managers is a course for economics students who major in human resource management. It is designed for 52 academic hours in a classroom setting and 27 hours of self-study.

The goal of the course is to develop and improve students’ English language skills in reading, speaking, listening, and writing that are involved in studying human resource management and are essential for personnel managers.

The book contains 13 units covering the most important topics concerned with the functions and responsibilities of human resource managers, such as human resource planning, recruiting, selecting, orientation and training of employees, appraising their performance, as well as compensating, promoting, transferring and terminating workforce[1]. Each unit, except the last one, includes the main text with a pertinent vocabulary, one or two additional texts and supporting exercises designed to develop students’ English language competences in reading, speaking, listening and writing. Most exercises are meant for work in pairs or in small groups, which not only helps students gain the interpersonal skills they will need in their future work, but also enhances their learning motivation and promotes and facilitates the learning process. The last, 13-th, unit presents a challenging case, which tests the students’ judgement and decision-making skills, as well as their ability to use English for professional purposes.

Texts for self-study, which deal with such topics as teams and groups in the organization, leadership, and motivation, are aimed at the enhancement of students’ competence in profession-oriented reading. Each text is accompanied by exercises designed to develop reader’s skills in finding key words, guessing the meaning of new words from the context, understanding both main points and supporting details contained in the text, and summarizing the material.

End-of-book materials include tapescripts of audio materials and a glossary of key terms in alphabetical order.
