Why Appearance Is Important

We are all more concerned with our appearance. For most of us, this concern is not simply vanity. Reality means having too much pride in one's appearance. On the other hand, concern about appearance is quite understandable because attractive people have many advantages in our society.

According to the Social Issues Research Centre in Oxford, England, studies

show that:

I . attractive children are more popular ;

2 . teachers give attractive children better grades;

3. attractive job applicants have a better chance of getting hired. They also get higher salaries;

4. people generally believe that physically attractive people have other desirable characteristics such as intelligence, competence, confidence, and morality. (T h e good princess is always beautiful; the wicked stepmother is always ugly.)

Therefore, it is not surprising that physical attraction is of great importance to us. This concern with appearance did not begin with modern Western culture. Every period of history has had standards of beauty. For example, one hundred years ago in China, people thought that women should have very small feet. To achieve this ideal, girls had their feet bound to stop their natural growth. However, even though appearance has been important in every age and every culture, it has not always been as important as it is today. Western societies today are obsessed with physical appearance. Some people believe that science and the media have caused this obsession.

TEXT 4.

The Application

The application is the first step in obtaining a job. At this stage – as in every stage – how you present yourself to the hiring manager is critical. Sloppy, disorganized applications will quickly be rejected. In contrast, applications that are clear and logical stand a competitive chance of being reviewed.

Tips for completing an outstanding application:

1. Type instead of printing

2. Remember that neatness counts

3. If you make a mistake, ask the employer for another blank application so that you can turn in a perfect copy

4. Don’t forget who your reader is. You must write in the American style or else the employer will not understand you.

5. DOB – In Kazakhstan, it’s Day/Month/Year. In the U.S., it is Month/Day/Year. You must get this right or you stand the chance of having problems with your taxes and important documents

6. Street addresses should be as follows: 1934 Main St. Apt. #4

7. Under state, remember to write out Kazakhstan. If you put KZ, the post office in the U.S. may read it as KS which is Kansas.

8. Use the direct dial method allowing the hiring manager to call you immediately – people lose jobs every day simply because the employer was unable to contact them!

9. Make sure your cell phone number is on the application even if there isn’t a specific space for it

10. Always write in pen – blue or black ink – if you cannot type the application

11. Be honest about your application. In the Internet age, employers can easily find out if you are lying or not

What do hiring managers look for when reviewing applications?

§ Neatness and professionalism in presentation

§ A stable work history

§ Successful completion of past jobs and projects

§ Remaining employed for at least two years or more on each job

§ Leaving a job on good terms with your previous employer

§ People who can easily relocate and are flexible as to location
