Founded in 1918, Saint Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts is the oldest institution of culture in Russia. For 95 years it has been training highly qualified specialists for various areas related to culture, and it seems symbolic that the institution is situated in one of the most beautiful places of the city, on the bank of the Neva, in the buildings that remember different historical and cultural events. The two-storey mansion near Troitskiy Bridge was designed by the famous architect Giacomo Quarenghi. In 1812 the Emergency Committee elected M. Kutuzov to be the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Army in this building. In the 1830-40s there was a famous salon led by Dolly Fikelmon, Kutuzov’s grand daughter and an Austrian diplomat’s wife. The salon was often visited by Alexander Pushkin. The institution moved in the palace in 1924. Another building on the embankment, the Oldengburgsky palace, became a part of the university in 1962. The famous Russian fable-writer Ivan Krylov lived in it for several years. In 1986 the University received one more building which is a small palace by Francesco Bartolomeo Rastrelly in 7 Millionnaya Street. Adorned by a sculpture group of three muses, the palace belonged to the farther of the Russian poet Antioch Kantemir in the early 18th century. Today it houses the faculty of library and information studies. Three other university buildings are scattered about the city.

The University occupies the 15th position in the list of top universities of culture in Russia. It runs 54 educational courses grouped into three levels: Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral. The students can get a degree in such areas as Theatrical Performances and Festivals Directing, Museum Science and Objects of Heritage Preservation, Music Instrumental Art, Conducting, Art of Folk Culture, Music Stage Art and Jazz, Folk Singing Art, Cinema and Television Directing, Actor’s Art, Art History, Restoration, Political Science, Applied IT, Business IT, Design, Advertising and Public Relations and others. Whatever course students decide upon, they receive balanced education in humanities and all necessary skills for their future profession.

As the society is changing, the syllabi are being renewed and the new programmes and subjects are being introduced. Undergraduate students can pursue a variety of pre-professional programmes. As a first- and second-year student, you will take predominantly arts and science classes including literature, history, psychology and/or sociology, one of foreign languages, computers, and PE. In most cases, pre-professional curricula do not require a student to major in a particular discipline, but rather follow a prescribed set of courses spanning several disciplines.

Your professional education generally begins in your third year (when you choose your major) and includes a set of core courses in a certain area (e.g. library studies, museum studies, stage directing). The rest of your third and final year courses will focus on your specific major, electives, and a course of practical training.

Academically talented students can continue their studies at postgraduate level. If you think about gaining an extra qualification, specializing in a particular field, or conducting research for a career in academia, Master’s program is the best choice for you. Since 2011 the University has been running 24 Master’s courses. Having obtained a Master’s degree, you can apply for a doctorate programme and achieve even a higher academic level. This programme is very demanding and often leads to careers in academia.

As a house for about twenty academic and creative schools, Saint Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts takes part in some inter-institutional projects, such as Laboratory of Pedagogic Culturology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and runs a number of international schools, seminars, and conferences. The university welcomes two large international conferences, Culture on the Eve of the XXI century and Internet and Education, which attract a great number of specialists from Russia and foreign countries. The University regularly organizes meetings with renowned Russian and foreign art workers, cinematography evenings (Club “CultDoc”), different educational trips and a great number of other interesting events.
