Start of your work J

Donetsk, Ukraine, 01.10.2013 – 30.06.2014

Projekt ideaJ

Donetsk Youth Debate Centre (Donetsk, Ukraine) together with four partners from Bulgary, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal and Spain within the “Youth in Action” programme implements project " Intergeneration Dialogue. Part II"

EVS project “Intergeneration Dialogue. Part II” is continuation of the our 6-month EVS project which has been implemented in Donetsk (Ukraine) in January-June 2013.

Idea to work with different generations - kids, youngsters and elderly people – was rather new for Donetsk and in some way it was our experiment to do it. The idea is based on our experience which we got implementing our EVS projects according to which young volunteers work with children, providing outdoor and inside sport and games activities for children in youth clubs, as well as organizing different intercultural sessions, handmade activities sessions, so on. During the work we noticed that when we work with younger kids (4-8 years old), normally parents or the most often grandparents bring them to the youth club and they are waiting for their children during sessions our volunteers make for children. Then we decided to involve adults – especially seniors to activities with volunteers – physical activities sessions, language clubs, origami making sessions, tea-drinking sessions, and presentations about the countries.

Work with different generations gives young volunteers better understanding of Ukrainian people and culture, provides them with possibility to develop different skills.

You can check short summury of activities done by our previous group on http://cent.dn.ua/yia/evs/english-intergeneration-dialogue-2/?lang=en

Hosting organization – Donetsk Youth Debate CentreJ

Donetsk Youth Debate Centre is non-governmental, non-for profit, youth organisation. It was founded in 1997 under the initiative of school teachers, debate clubs trainers and young people of Donetsk and Lugansk regions. The grassroots of the organisation was the Debate program financed by International Renascence Foundation (Soros Foundation). Nowadays the area of the Organisation’s activities is much wider but we still use debates as a method.

At present the Organisation works as an informational and methodical centre for thousands pupils and students; teachers of different educational establishments, including universities; leaders of civic organizations and wide circle of young people of Eastern Ukraine. Every year organisation implements about 5-8 educational or/and social projects, both on local, national and international level.

Organisation has its own office, where 4 people works on full-time regular base (director, 3 project coordinators, accountant), we have three more fully equipped working places which can be used by our local and international volunteers. DYDC works in close cooperation with about 20 schools and about 10 high educational establishments in Donetsk, providing them with informational, educational support, as well as with wide circle of educational and social establishments in Donetsk region and all over Ukraine.

Work of organisation is carried on both in the office (where we have working places and all necessary equipment) – preparation of the projects, preparing of all the necessary documentations, materials, conduction of the team meetings and meetings with youth – individual and in small groups (up to 15 people), and so-called “field work” – when in frame of our projects we conduct some educational or social activities – in school, youth centres, Universities or rented places – in case of bigger-scaled events.

Depends on project we implement we actively involve our local volunteers (about 10 people with whom we cooperate on regular base and about 20 more whom we involve recently in our activities), as well as use help of experts in different fields (professional psychologists, social workers, trainers, University professors) in case if project requires it.

Since 2004 we have been working actively on development the projects in frame of Youth and then Youth in Action Program (Action 2 and Action 3.1) – both as sending and hosting organization. Since 2008 we hosted more than 45 volunteers from all around Europe and have sent about 30 young Ukrainians for EVS in EU countries.

Start of your work J

First day (or days) of your stay here - is for resting – you will meet your roommates, your mentor, your coordinator, we will provide you with your pocket money, so you will be able to make your first shopping and discover a little bit the area.

On the first weekend (5-6 th of October) we are planning to organize some meting with all the mentors and local volunteers to let you get introduced to local youthJ

We will start real “work” on Monday, October,7 and during first two weeks you are going to have intense schedule as we will need to get integrated to Donetsk realities, get to know each other, plan your project and get to know people and places where you will implement your future activities. Besides, during the first two weeks we will make Russian Survival Language workshops for you to introduce you to Russian language and teach together “survival” Russian.

In the end of the second week we are going to make individual schedule and to divide you in small groups of 2-3 people, so that you will be ready to start your activities. Besides, you will continue learning Russian in small groups according to your language level.

Starting from third week your tasks will be:

- planning of work, preparation of work and work with children and parents and grandparents, among others there can be: sport games, active team games, short intercultural sessions, language sessions, etc.

- making pictures and videos during activities;

- writing down short stories about the project and adding them to the web page of the project;

- participation in weekly planning and evaluation sessions, language course.

Be ready to work in small groups 2-3 people together (different groups for different activities), probably every day in different place. Your working week will be 34-38 hours, 5 days per week.

We expect that one day each of you will work in the office, this day can be used for individual planning with coordinator, individual evaluation via writing blog, or preparing information for the web-page or developing your individual activity in the office or helping us with routine office work.

And another four days you will spend in different places – we will choose the places according to your preferences after the visits we will make during the first weeks.

Once a week we will have meeting all together – to share what was done during the week, discuss possible problems, share ideas, evaluate what was done and plan future week.

In the middle of November we will invite you to on-arrival training in Slavsko (Western Ukraine) where you will have chance to meet other EVS volunteers all over Ukraine and share your, ideas, problems, experience with them and with professional trainers from SALTO EECA.

Volunteers will be asked to record work with cameras and video cameras (will be provided) and to make small movies on base of their work. These video and audio material volunteers will be asked to add to the web-page of the HO and to promote in this way all the experience of the project.

Volunteers have right for two extra free days per month. You can take your days of holidays every month or collect them and use all of them in one time. It’s important that coordinator should be informed about time when you want to take holidays at least 2 weeks in advance.

Language course J

As Donetsk is mostly Russian speaking city we will provide volunteers with Russian language course.

During the first two weeks we will provide the group with Survival Russian Workshops, 10 workshops in total, in order ro let you learn simplest important phrases and to feel comfortable on the street, in the shop or in busJ

Later - depends on level of the volunteers they will be suggested either to join group for beginners either tandem system (for those who already knows some Russian).

Group for beginners will provide volunteers with speaking Russian knowledge, during 9 months of project volunteers will attend 20 lessons.

Tandem system means that volunteer will be working individually with Russian speaking person on base of individual schedule, Volunteer will be asked to help Russian speaking person to improve his or her skills in native language of volunteer, and local person instead will help EVS volunteer with learning Russian.

Besides, mentors will be asked to help EVS volunteers with practicing of their Russian and preparation of home works.

It’s HIGHLY recommended to volunteers to learn Russian alphabet and rules of reading before arrival. It’s very important cause he you will see Cyrillic letters everywhere – on the shops, street names, menus in cafes, etc.

Basic Russian course (with pronunciation, useful expressions and exercises) you can find here: http://www.russianlessons.net/

Donetsk J

Donetsk is a big industrial city in the south-east part of Ukraine. The city has around 1 mln inhabitants. It is the fifth-largest city in Ukraine. Donetsk lies in the steppe landscape of Ukraine, surrounded by scattered woodland, hills (slag heaps), rivers, and lakes. The northern outskirts of the city are mainly used for agriculture. The Azov Sea, 95 km south of Donetsk, is a popular recreational area for those living in Donetsk. A wide belt of farmlands surrounds the city.

Weather here varies a lot according to the season (from +30 during the summer, to –20-30 during the winter).

While the majority of people in central and western Ukraine speak Ukrainian, most residents of Donetsk are Russian-speaking Ukrainians and ethnic Russians.

The main forms of transport within Donetsk are: trams, electric trolley buses, buses and marshrutkas (private minibuses). It should be taken into consideration that transport system here is not really developed: there are no names of bus-stations on them, no schedule, maps of routs can be found in the busses, but not on the bus-stops. Taxies are very popular here, as they are very cheap and accessible.

Donetsk and the surrounding territories are heavily urbanized and agglomerated into conurbation. The workforce is heavily involved with heavy industry, especially coal mining. The city is an important center of heavy industry and coal mines in the Donets Basin (Donbas) and Ukraine.

After the fall of the Soviet Union, Donetsk and other neighboring cities of the Donbas suffered heavily, as many factories were closed down and many inhabitants lost their jobs. That is why DYDC works actively not only in Donetsk itself, but in small cities of Donetsk region with aim to improve situation there.

However, in spite of the difficult economic situation in Ukraine, Donetsk is a developing city.

Donetsk is a well-known educational location of the surrounding area, accompanied with several universities, which include 5 state universities, 11 institutes, 3 academies, 14 technical schools, 5 private universities, and 6 colleges.

The nightlife in Donetsk is quite active. We have lots of clubs, pubs and bars, many of which are made for students. It is possible to choose different music, style, menu and price. We have several cinemas in different parts of the city and also the theaters that offer the entertainment at higher cultural level.

The gastronomy (from fast food to restaurants) is well developed, diversified and easy to find at any time of the day and night.

Local transport J

As we don’t have monthly tickets here, we will give to each of you the amount of 10€ monthly to cover local travel expenses you might have. As transport is very cheap here (one way ticket is 1,5-2,5 hryvnas (0,15 – 0,25€) it’s enough to cover monthly travel expenses.

In case if volunteer will use more than 10€ monthly for trips connected to work and taking into consideration the cheapest mean of transport, extra expenses will be reimbursed as well. We will ask you to make calculation in the end of ever month in order to get additional reimbursement if you spend more than 10 euros for travels needed by project activities.

To will need to cover by yourself your personal local travels which have no connection to project activities.
