Lewis Carroll

The real name of Lewis Carroll was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson (1831—1898). He wrote two of the most famous books in English literature - «Alice's Adventures in Wonderland» and its continuation, «Through the Looking-Glass and What Alioce Found, Theset». People all over the world enjoyed these books, Carroll wrote both books mainly for children but adults found humour, fantastic characters and adventures also intersting.

Lewis Carroll was born in Daresbury, in northwest England. He studied at the ChristChurch. OxfordUniversity, After University he taught mathematics at ChristChurch in 1855 and spent most of his life at the school. In 1861 Carroll båñàmå a deacon in the Church of England.

Actually Carroll liked children. The book «Alice in Wonderland» appeared to amuse a little girl named Alice Liddell, the daughter of the dean ofChristChurch, He told her the story of Alice, then he wrote the story down. Later, in 1865 the whole book was published.

This book tells us about the adventures ofa littje girl in amake-believe world under the ground. Alice lands in the «wonderland» after she is falling down a hole follfwing a white rabbit. She meets there many strange characters, including the Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts and others.

Carroll's book «Through the Looking-filaes» (1871) introduced new characters and new adventures.

Carroll's other books are «Silvie and Bruno», a fairy tale in verse and prose. The poem «The Hunting of the Snark» (1879) tells the story of the Banker, Baker, Beaver, Bellman and other amusing characters in search of a Snark, an animal that does not exist.

Joanne Rowling

Joanne Rowling is an English fiction writer. She became famous as author of the Harry Potter fantasy books. Joanne Rowling was born in Bristol in England on 31 July 1965. When Rowling was four where she St Michael's Primary School. Later her family moved to Wales. At the university shi studied French and Classics, after a year of study in Paris, she moved to London. Rowling then moved to Portugal to teach English as a foreign language. In 1992 she married but a year later she divorced. They had one child, Jessica. In December 1994, she and her daughter moved Edinburgh, Scotland.

In 1995, Rowling finished her first book Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. A year later the editor Barry Cunningham from the small publisher Bloomsbury agreed to publish the book. Soon after, Rowling received £8000 from the Scottish Arts Council to continue writing. The following spring Scholastic Inc company paid Rowling more than $100,000 for the rights to publish the novel.



In December, 1999, the third Harry Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, won the Smarties Prize. In January, 2000, Prisoner of Azkaban won the Whitbread Children's Book of the Year award. Book 6 earned The Guinness World Records Award for being the fastest selling book ever.

In February 2004, Forbes magazine said her fortune at over US$ 1 billion, calling her the first person who became a $US billionaire by writing books.
