Global coal use by sector

Diagrams-answers

Describe the process of underground aggregate mine works.

“The Process of underground aggregate mine works”

This picture shows main steps of mining. It is underground method of mining. The underground mine is used when the ore deposit is deep. There are many types of used equipment: elevator, drilling rig, belt conveyor, crusher, shot create machine. There are 6 steps:

1) Rock is blasted at the mine face

2) Blasted aggregate is loaded into large trucks

3) The aggregate is trucked to the primary crusher

4) The crusher breaks down the aggregate into pieces small enough to be carried by conveyor

5) A conveyor halls crushed aggregate to the surface

6) At the surface the aggregate is sorted into different sizes

With the help of the picture explain the process of the mining methods

“The process of the mining methods”

This picture shows two types of mining: surface and underground.

A mine in which the ore lies near the surface and can be extracted by removing the covering layers of rock and soil is surface mine. There are used two kind of methods: mechanical excavation (open-cast) and aqueous method (placer). Surface mining process consists from: drilling, blasting, loading, hauling, transporting and washing. Equipment: dragline, dozer, thin-seam miner, excavator.

The underground mine is used when the ore deposit is deep, or grade is high enough to exceed costs. Two types of underground mining methods are used: soft rock mining method and hard rock mining method. Equipment: elevator, drilling rig, belt conveyor, roadheader, shotcreate machine.

Global coal use by sector

Model answer

The charts compare the amount of coal used for chemical industry, industry and homes around the world.

It is clear that global coal needs rose significantly between 1900 and 2000, and that industry accounted for the largest proportion of coal used.

In 1900, around 550 thousand tonnes of coal was used by the industrial sector worldwide. The figures for chemical and domestic coal consumption stood at around one fifth of that amount. By 2000, global coal use for industrial use had increased to around 4500 thousand tonnes, domestic coal use had risen to just under half that amount, and chemical industry consumption had reached approximately 500 thousand tonnes.
