Advertising potential

Businesses are also rapidly picking up on the free advertising potential of social networks. In this respect businesses have a lot to learn from social movements, which in many instances have used social networks to generate vast public support entirely for free.

The protest campaign against the allegedly rigged results of Russia's parliamentary elections in December gained tens of thousands of supporters on Vkontakte and Facebook in a matter of days.

"A simple ad has no fun element to it and does not involve interactive communication with the user," Gudilin said. "But if there is a dialogue and the user is involved, he has the chance to learn something useful for himself and might get a positive impression of the company."

Yulia Kalacheva, founder of Sarafan PR Company in St. Petersburg told The Moscow News that being able to advertize on social networks is particularly valuable for companies with low advertizing budgets. The firm manages the Facebook and Vkontakte pages of the Erarta Museum of Contemporary Art.

"We think it is especially important for galleries in Petersburg to use this resource as it is far cheaper than outdoor advertising and has a similar impact," Klacheva told The Moscow News.

JUST FOR FUN   Do you know what red herring is? It is anything that diverts attention from a topic or line of inquiry. Can you think of a similar idiom in Russian? Here are some of the well-known examples of red herrings which are often timed to the April’s Fools Day: Londoners read in the newspaper that everybody could watch white lions washing in the Tower. Crowds of people rushed to the walls of the famous prison. 200 years later one British newspaper republished the same comic announcement and London dwellers rushed to the Tower again. BBC “Panorama” program reported about the Swiss farmer who managed to grow and harvest a wonderful crop of macaroni thanks to some new technology. The news provoked an avalanche of telephone calls from all over Britain to get the address of the farmer and to ask for details of that new technology. Daily Mail reported about a Japanese athlete who took part in London marathon. Because of the ’mistranslation he decided that the marathon lasted 26 days instead of 26 miles and was still running somewhere around England. The USA Today published the advertisement f a new hamburger of the “Burger King” company which was specially designed for the left-handers. The next morning thousands of the fast food restaurant visitors came to demand a new hamburger.
