Competency 14 Assignment Instructions

Competency 14 “The teacher understands the Oklahoma core curriculum and is able to develop instructional strategies/plans based on Oklahoma core curriculum.”

Instructions:

1.Create a lesson plan, or modify an existing lesson plan which you previously created, which has not been submitted to your portfolio (each of the 15 competencies cannot be duplicate artifacts). The lesson plan must include one objective fromOklahoma Core Curriculum Priority Academic Student Skills (PASS).Make sure the PASS objective(s) are aligned to the lesson. See Oklahoma State Department of Education website for PASS objectives http://sde.state.ok.us/Curriculum/PASS/default.html

o At least one PASS objective must be used.

o The PASS Objective must be labeled with the PASS topic, Grade level and provide Standard number(s), quote the standard objective, and if applicable provide the sub-number, and quote the objective(s).

EXAMPLE:

PASS Social Studies: United States History, Grade 8

Standard 2: The student will develop skills in discussion, debate, and

persuasive writing by analyzing historical situations and events.

2.3 Write on, speak about, and dramatize different evaluations of the

causes and effects of major events (e.g., the American Revolution, the Constitutional Convention, the Industrial Revolution, westward expansion, the Civil War, and Reconstruction

2.4 Examine the development and emergence of a unique American

culture (e.g., art, music, and literature).

2.The lesson plan must quote at least one standard fromeither A or Bbelow to qualify for an Portfolio score of Acceptable (2), or both A and Bto qualify for an Comp. 14 Portfolio score of Target (3):

A. National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS). Quote At least one of the 5 NBPTS Core Propositions and it must be demonstrated in your lesson plan:

B.Quote at leastone standard, or at least one teacher performance,from a Specialized Professional Association Standards (SPA) specific for the lesson plan topic.Include the name of the SPA used(i.e. National Council of Teacher of English, National Science Teachers Association, etc.)

~ When you get to the SPA website search for ‘Standards”

~ Your methods instructor can also provide hints and assistance with locating

SPA standards.

3.In addition to the NBPTS/SPA, there should be one or more specific lesson objective(s) which describe in more detail the skill(s) and/or knowledge the students should attain by the end of the lesson.

4.The lesson plan should demonstrate your ability to develop instructional strategies/activities based on the lesson plan objectives. All of the objectives must be aligned (related to)the learning activities For ideas about look at the METHODOLOGY/INSTRUCTIONAL STRATEGIES/ACTIVITIESsection in the Unit & Lesson Plan Guide (in appendix of Pre-II Handbook)

5.The lesson should have a formal assessment which provides evidence as to whether or not the students met all of the lesson objectives. & the assessment(s) learner performance. For ideas for assessment methods look at the EVALUATION/ASSESSMENT section in the Unit & Lesson Plan Guide (in appendix of Pre-II Handbook).

Do Not:

Ä Do not use a lesson plan which you have already put into your ePortfolio – or one you plan on using for another Portfolio competency.

Ä It does not need to be a lesson which you have taught. You can modify a lesson plan you created (for another course) or create a new lesson plan.

Ä It does not need to be in a specific lesson plan format, as long as it meets the Competency 14 rubric requirements for acceptable (2) or target (3).

Ä Do not submit the competency to Cindi Fries, submit it to Lereen Neugin (she will forward it to an appropriate assessor).

Ä Do not look at the overall competency score and think it means you passed! After it is assessed look at the detailed VIEW to see the score for all 6 areas of the rubric.

DO:

ü Do create your lesson plan by following the Oklahoma Criteria for Effective Teaching(see Pre-II Handbook).

ü Do Submit Competency 14 to Lereen Neugin (not Cindi Fries) by, or before, the due date deadline.

ü Do check your lesson plan against the Competency 14 rubric and use the current Artifact Cover Sheetformat before submitting to ePortfolio http://coe.nsuok.edu/eportfolio/Resources.aspx

ü Do check all 6 scores to see if you passed. When you receive the email that your competency has been assessed make sure to open ‘view’ in the MY RESULTS section in Chalk and Wire and look at each of the 6 scores your competency received. If you have a 1 (unacceptable) for one, or more, of the 6 scores you did not pass. You MUST revise and resubmit both the artifact cover sheet and the lesson plan ASAP (don’t wait for the deadline for the last date to resubmit).
