Arrangement of artificial teeth

Artificial teeth available are porcelain, acrylic resin teeth. There are indications and contraindications for the use of each. Acrylic teeth are easier to adjust than porcelain teeth. This can be an advantage when much adjustment to the denture teeth is necessary to arrange them. Porcelain teeth are more abrasion resistant than acrylic teeth. There are not affected by flaming the wax. The patient is much less likely to suffer a loss of vertical dimension due to occlusal wear with porcelain teeth. Porcelain teeth can fracture if the denture is dropped and click when the patient occludes. They are difficult to arrange if the patient has large residual ridges when much grinding is involved. Porcelain teeth don't bond to the acrylic resin denture base. They are held in mechanically by pins and diatoric holes. When a lot of adjusting is needed to arrange the teeth, the pins and holes can be lost. This makes it difficult to retain the teeth in the denture base.

The artificial teeth come on a plastic form called a card. There are six anterior teeth (two centrals, two laterals and two canines) on a card. This is called a 1 X 6 (pronounced one by six). This means one card with 6 anterior teeth. 1 X 6 is placed in the column marked "number”.

Posterior teeth also come from the manufacturer on a plastic form called a card. Since there are eight posterior teeth (four premolars and four molars) on a card, it is referred to as a 1 X 8 (pronounced one by eight). Place 1 X 8 in the column marked "number."

Artificial teeth are selected by the size, form and color.

Anterior artificial teeth are arranged primarily for esthetics. Even when great care is taken to select the proper mold and shade for a particular patient, an unnatural denture can still be created if care is not taken during tooth arrangement.

The form of the teeth depended of the general outline of the face. Face forms may be grouped into four basic classific – square, square tapering, tapering and ovoid.

The general pattern of bone loss, though modified by individual variations, is essentially upward and backward for the maxillary anterior residual ridge and downwards for the mandibular anterior residual ridge. Therefore, maxillary artificial anterior teeth must be arranged anteriorly and inferiorly to the residual alveolar ridge to occupy the position formerly occupied by the natural teeth. Remember the maxillary anterior teeth are arranged "down and out" from the ridge.
