To establish clear L

1. Raise the tongue tip to contact the gum ridge. Hold the tongue in this position and say a series of EE sounds.

2. Hold the tongue tip on the gum ridge, say EE and allow the tongue tip to fall behind the lower teeth.

5. Repeat the following sequence:

6. Practise the words and sentences containing clear L.

 

To establish dark L

1. Raise the tip of the tongue to contact and hold the gum ridge. Say a series of OO sounds.

2. Hold the tongue tip on the gum ridge, say OO and allow the tongue tip to fall behind the lower teeth.

3. Repeat OOL several times.

4. Repeat the following sequence of sounds:

OOLG OOLK / OOLG OOLK / OOLG OOLK

5. Speak the following sequence:

 

6. Use the practice words and sentences for dark L.

 

To establish the sound at the ends of words such as kettle and middle

1. Hold the tongue tip against the gum ridge and try to say a T sound. Allow the T sound to explode over the lowered sides of the tongue. Repeat this several times without moving the tongue tip.

2. Place the vowels in front of the sound achieved in exercise 1. Note the rise of the tongue tip to the gum ridge and hold it there while a T sound is attempted.

3. Make the sound in exercise 1 but add an L sound. Do not allow the tongue to fall between the T and the L. Do this very slowly.

4. Place the forefinger behind the upper front teeth, raise the tongue tip to contact the gum ridge and feel the underside of the tongue with the finger. Hold this position and attempt to say T L very slowly.

5. Retaining the finger behind the upper front teeth, say the following sequence of sounds, feeling the underside of the tip of the tongue contact and hold the finger as the TL sequence is said slowly:

6. Repeat exercise 5 without the use of the finger.
