SEASONS

There are four seasons in the year: spring, summer, autumn, and winter. Every season lasts three months.

Winter begins in December and ends in February. In winter we have the shortest days and the longest nights. It is rather unpleasant to get up early in the morning in winter because it is dark and cold. But winter is a good time for sports. In winter we can go in such kinds of sports as skating, skiing and tobogganing. It is very pleasant to go skiing on a bright frosty sunny day. At the end of winter the sun begins to shine as brightly as in spring, but it is not so warm as in spring yet.

Spring comes in March. Nature awakens from its winter sleep. Snow begins to melt. The sun begins to shine more brightly and the days get longer. Spring flowers such as snowdrops, violets, mimosa, tulips, and daffodils appear everywhere. Everybody enjoys the beginning of spring.

Summer is the warmest season of the year. Sometimes it rains, but the rain is warm and it doesn’t last long. Many people have their holidays in summer and spend a lot of time out in the open air. Most people leave town for the coast and have a wonderful time there, swimming sunbathing playing different games.

After summer comes autumn. It is the most beautiful season. Early autumn is called “Indian summer”, when the weather is warm and mild, and the trees are turning yellow and red. The leaves fall down and the ground is covered with them. Little by little the days become shorter and the nights become longer. It gets colder and very often dark heavy clouds gather in the sky and it rains. Sometimes it even snows. It gets windy and it’s not pleasant to stay out of doors.

Dialogues.

- Hello!

- Hello! It’s Andrew speaking. I say, Julia, Have you got anything special planned for the week-end?

- NO, really not. Why?

- What about going for a picnic? The weather’s warm and I hope it’ll keep fine till the week-end.

- It’s a splendid idea! But I do not think we can rely on the weather these days; we are in for a spell of rainy weather.

- DO you really believe all that weather forecasting stuff? It sounds romantic to be caught in cold autumn rain in the wood and get soaked to skin and catch a cold afterwards

- Oh, no. That doesn’t appeal to me. I suggest going to the concert or a film or just have a quiet evening listening to music. Actually if the weather is nice we may go cycling or play a game of tennis, cricket or golf in the afternoon.

- All right. Settled. Do you mind asking John and Maggie to join us?

- That’ll be fine. Phone them, will you?

- OK, Bye.
