Setting Excel Worksheet.

General guidelines for using the spreadsheet application Excel

The practical aim of the assignment: to learn different ways of starting the application on a computer; study the interface of the spreadsheet; learn how to use Help system of the application.

The theoretical aim of the assignment: to revise the functions of the keyboard, basic notions of the Windows graphic interface, Windows toolbar and ways of using it; to learn how to use Windows Help system.

Assignments

Ways of starting the spreadsheet application Excel.

1.1. Create the Excel launcher on the desktop.

1. Click on the Start button.

2. In the menu item select Microsoft Excel.

3. Right-click on the selected item to call out the context menu. In the context menu select Send to → Desktop (launcher).

1.2. Start Excel through Windows Explorer

Right-click on the Start button. Select Explorer → C: → Program Files → Microsoft Office → Excel.exe (double click on).

1.3. Start Excel using the Main Menu, item “Search for”

1. Click on the Start button.

2. In the Start Menu select the <Search for> item, in the pop-up menu click on the item <Files and folders>.

3. In the Name text box, located in the Find dialogue tab: All files insert Excel.exe; press the <Enter> button on the keyboard or click on the Find button.

4. After Windows stops searching for the needed file, right-click on the Excel.exe icon.

5. In the context menu select the item Create Launcher (on the desktop).

6. Press the button <Enter> on the keyboard and click on the Yes button.

1.4. Start Excel using the taskbar.

1. Select the taskbar space.

2. Press the <Ctrl> button, while holding it, and drag the Microsoft Excel launcher to the taskbar.

Ways of changing desktop settings.

2.1. Change the desktop colour.

1. Right-click on the desktop.

2. In the context menu select <Properties>.

3. Choose the Desktop Tab.

4. On the Desktop Tab, click on the Customize Desktop, choose the No button, in the box Colour choose Blue.

2.2. In the same way select Windows Theme.

2.3. Arrange icons by name on the desktop.

Setting Excel Worksheet.

3.1. Explain the marks in the title bar.

3.2. Learn how to use the menu bar. To enter the menu, press Alt or F10.

3.3. Learn to use the control keys of the document window and of the application window.

3.4. Learn to change the size, shape and placement of the window with the mouse.

3.5. Set the Standard and the Formatting toolbars and hide all others. Menu item View → Toolbars → Standard, Formatting.

3.6. Learn to move the toolbars.

3.7. Open the submenus. To do this, click on the icon ">>" at the end of the toolbar, and read the names of all the instruments of this toolbar.

3.8. Enter in cell B2 year of your birth, and explore all the icons in the formula bar without closing the cell.



3.9. Right-click on the open worksheet tabs, and look through the menu items in the shortcut menu.

3.10. Status bar. Look through the indicators of the status bar: Num Lock, Scroll Lock, Caps Lock, Automatic calculation, Ins.

4. Help system of the spreadsheet program "EXCEL".

4.1. Interactive help system.

1. Click the first drop-down menu item from the Help menu or press F1.

2. Type question such as, "Toolbars", click on the Search button or press Enter.

3. Click on the needed topic, such as Delete toolbar or menu. A new window will appear Microsoft Excel Help, showing the contents of the selected topics.

4.2. Click on the icon Show in the Help window (upper left corner). After that the Help window expands and to the left the panel with three tabs will be added: Contents, Query Wizard and Index.

1. Contents. Click on the needed topic, and then on the selected topic category. The needed information will be displayed in the right pane of the window.

2. Answer Wizard. Enter a specific question, click on the Find button, and select the needed section.

3. Index. Type into the Help box the first letters of the needed topic, or select a topic from the scrolling list displayed below. Then, in the list box, select a section and a particular topic, double-clicking it. Contents of the help topic appear in the right pane of the Microsoft Excel Help.

4.3. Context-dependent help.

1. In the menu item Help choose What is it, or press <Shift+F1>.

2. Place the cursor on the letter B on the Formatting toolbar, and click the button. Read the given information.

4.4. Animated image - Assistant.

1. Click the drop-down menu item Show the Office Assistant in the Help menu.

2. Click the Assistant image and enter your question.

4.5. Change the Assistant image.

1. Right-click on the Assistant.

2. Select Options.

3. In the Options dialog box, click on the Collection tab.

4. Click Next, choose Assistant image to your liking.

5. Exit the program.
