CLASS 11

Theme 11. THE ARTICULATORY ANALYSIS OF THE

ENGLISH CLOSING DIPHTHONGS WITH AN [I]-GLIDE: [eI], [aI], [OI]

The three English diphthongs with an [I]-glide [eI], [aI], [OI] are pronounced as follows.

The diphthong [eI]

Definition. The diphthong [eI] is a closing diphthong with an [I]-glide. The nucleus of the diphthong [eI] is practically the same as the vowel [e], i.e. front, mid-narrow, unrounded.

Articulation. 1. It is pronounced with the bulk of the tongue in the front part of the mouth cavity.

2. During the pronunciation of the nucleus of this diphthong the front of the tongue is raised in the direction of the hard palate, as for [e].

3. After completing the nucleus, the front of the tongue glides still higher, moving in the direction of [I], though the actual formation of [I] is not accomplished.

4. During the pronunciation of both the nucleus and the glide the lips are slightly spread.

5. The opening between the jaws is rather narrow, a little wider for the nucleus than for the glide.

Typical mistakes. 1. The vowel [eI] is often replaced by the monophthong [e], which is sometimes lengthened and becomes [e:]. The substitution of the diphthong [eI] for the monothong [e] is a phonemic mistake. In this case such English words as mate [meIt] and met [met] would sound alike and might be confused.

2. The glide of the diphthong is usually replaced by the distinct vowels [I], [i] or by the consonant [j], [õ’]. In order to prevent or correct these mistakes the gliding movement of the tongue should be stopped before the tongue reaches the position necessary to pronounce these sounds. The glide actually should sound like a very weak and vague [e].

The diphthong [aI]

Definition. The diphthong [aI] is a closing diphthong with an [I]-glide. The nucleus may be defined as front-retracted, low-broad, unrounded.

Articulation.1.The diphthong [aI]is pronounced with the bulk of the tongue in the front of the mouth cavity, but slightly retracted.

2. During the pronunciation of the nucleus the front of the tongue is slightly raised.

3. During the glide the front of the tongue moves higher, in the direction of [I], but without reaching it. The glide of [aI] sounds like a weak [e].

4. The opening between the jaws is rather wide for the nucleus and much narrower for the glide.

Typical mistakes. Ukrainian learners are apt to replace the nucleus of the English diphthong [aI] by the English [A:]. In order to prevent or correct this mistake it is necessary to pronounce a vowel intermediate in quality between the English vowel [{] and the Ukrainian [a]

The diphthong [OI]

Definition. The diphthong [OI] is a closing diphthong with an [I]-glide.The nucleus may be defined as back, low-narrow, slightly rounded.

Articulation.1.During the pronunciation of the nucleus of the diphthong the bulk of the tongue is in the back part of the mouth; the back of the tongue is slightly raised, though it is not so low as for the vowel [Q].

2. In pronouncing the glide the tongue moves forward and upward, that is in the direction of the position for [I], without actually reaching it. The glide sounds like a weak [e].

3. The lips are slightly rounded.

4. The opening between the jaws is wide for the nucleus and much narrower for the glide.

Typical mistakes. Ukrainian learners are apt to replace the nucleus of the diphthong [OI] by the Ukrainian vowel [o]. In order to prevent or correct this mistake the same directions should be given as for the prevention and correction of the mistakes in the pronunciation of the English vowel [Q].
