A). Read the following conversations between the customer and attendant and translate the word combinations in italics into Ukrainian.

At the gas station

Part 1.

Customer : I would like the full service. What kind of gas do you have available?
Attendant: We offer regular, diesel, and premium gas at very reasonable prices.
Customer : Please fill up my tank with the premium. Also, can you tell me how I can get to Brunswick?
Attendant: Go straight, bearing to your left. You will need the first exit off the highway.

Part 2.

Attendant: What can I do for you?
Customer : Fill it up, please.
Attendant: I guess your car takes unleaded gas.
Customer : That's correct. (Attendant finishes pumping the gas) How much gas did it take?
Attendant: Eight gallons.
Customer : Would you check the oil, please.
Attendant: It's below the full mark.
Customer : Please fill it up. Will you wash the windshield for me?
Attendant: Okay. Should I check the tires too?
Customer : Please , do. (Attendant fills the tires with air) How much do I owe you?
Attendant: 11 dollars even.
Customer : (pays for service) One more thing. What's the best way for me to get interstate highway 87?
Attendant: No problem, sir. (Explains the way to be taken)
Customer : Thank you.Next week I'll again for a tune-up. I need a major one.
Attendant: Our mechanic will be more than to help you. If possible, try to make an appointment with our mechanic.
Customer : Of course, I'll try.

UNIT III. KYIV – PLACES OF INTEREST

Pre-reading tasks

1. Brainstormall facts you know about places of interest of Kyiv.

2. Study the definitions of the following words:

Potential – the possibility that something will develop in a particular way, or have a particular effect or if people or things have potential, they have a natural ability or quality that could develop to make them very good.

Worship – to show respect and love for a god, especially by praying in a religious building.

Reign – the period when someone is king or queen or when someone is in charge of a group of people or a country.

Exterior – the outside of something, especially a building.

Interior – the inner part or inside of something.

Distinctive – having a special quality, character that is different and easy to recognize.

Grandiose – important or impressive but nor always practical.

Ensemble – a set of things that go together to form a whole.

Panorama – an impressive view of a wide area of land.

Mural – a painting that is painted on a wall, either inside or outside a building.

Supervision – when you supervise or control someone or something.

 

Kyiv is the capital of Ukraine and one of the biggest cities in Europe. It has been standing on steep hills overlooking the Dnipro River for more than 1,500 years. According to the ancient legend, Kyiv was founded by the three brothers Kyi, Schek and Khoryv and their sister Lybid, and it was named after the eldest brother Kyi. Since then, Kyiv has developed into a valuable center of East Europe attracting foreign businesses and investors to its economic and natural potential. As an important administrative center, Kyiv is a place for Ukrainian Presidential Administration, Verkhovna Rada, Parliament, and nearly all ministries and governmental departments. Its financial part consists of the National Bank of Ukraine around the world, as well as investment companies and funds, representative offices of foreign financial institutions, exchange markets, and more than 220 commercial banks. In Kyiv, more than 2,000 objects belong to historical, cultural, and architectural monuments.
