Lesson 5: Surface Area and Volume of a Right Prism

Lesson Component Description of Component For This Lesson
Lesson Opening   (10 minutes)     Introduction of New Material (5 minutes)   Objective: To calculate the area of a regular polygon. SWBAT: (1) identify the parts of a prism (2) find the lateral area, surface area and volume of a right prisms   Do Now: Refresh polynomial distribution Find the perimeter of a square with side = 7 inches. Find the area of a rectangle with dimensions 3in x 11in. Homework posted on board as students enter [HW] Pg. 478, Nos. 1 – 12, even, 18, 20, 22   (1) Mini-lesson I will illustrate the difference between the area of a figure and the volume of a solid. I will describe the characteristics of a prism (two congruent bases, with Area B, altitude, h, lateral faces and lateral edges). I will demonstrate how all lateral faces are parallelograms. I will define the difference between oblique and regular prisms (lateral faces are rectangles). I will show how prisms are classified by the shape of their bases (i.e. right triangular prism, oblique pentagonal prism, etc.). I will denote that the lateral edges of a regular prism are altitudes. I will demonstrate calculating the surface area (Also called the Total Area) of a prism using the Area Addition Postulate. I will demonstrate calculating the volume of a prism. S.A. = L.A. + 2B V = Bh (2) Engagement I will demonstrate calculating the Area of a lateral face and multiplying it by the number if sides on the shape of the base to determine the Lateral Area. I will demonstrate a second method, multiplying the perimeter of the base by the altitude of the prism.
Student Practice of New Material (20 minutes) (7) Exploration/Application Students will identify the shape of the base and altitude of a rectangular prism, then apply the appropriate formula to solve for the unknown component of the prism table in their notebooks.
Summary (5 minutes) (4) Assessment An exit ticket to assess, hand out index cards. Students will express, in words, at least 2 ways to calculate the lateral area, L.A., and Volume of the regular prism shown. Submit index card before departing class.

Part 3. Complete the below table in your notebook by applying the formula for Area and perimeter of a regular pentagon.

l 5 cm 2 m ?
w 7 cm 4 m 10 ft
h 3 cm ? 30 ft
L.A. ? 48m2 900 ft2
S.A. ? ? ?
V ? ? ?
