Vocabulary:

the aim of the colloquium — to keep the researchers up-to-day on major advances and problems in the field;

you can meet — staff members, scientists from other institutes, research stu­dents;

problems /issues – important, relevant, burning, urgent, topical of significance, of interest;

lectures on various problems — to deliver, to read, to give;

reports on the progress of the research — to make, to deliver, to draw up;

the atmosphere — to be friendly, cordial, relaxed;

the participants — to express their ideas and views quite freely, to be open (frank, cordial);

the exchange of views — to be thorough, con­structive, to be typical of a genuine scientific discussion;

re­search students — to familiarize themselves with interesting (current, up-to-date) scientific problems, to discuss the results of their research, to gain experience in (+N /Ving), to hold dis­cussions, to stimulate further research, to keep oneself abreast of the developments in the field, to update ones knowledge, to practice one’s technical skills.

 

 

D). a) INTERVIEW your fellow students on the social program of the meeting they attended. Speak on the responsibilities of the Organizing Committee. Use the vocabulary below

Vocabulary:

to become better acquainted with one another; to go sight-seeing; places of interest (=sights of the city); recreational activities; social events; to arrange social activities /a social program; to visit a museum /exhibition; to go to the theatre; to take sb on a tour about the city; to make a boat trip along the river; to hold a reception /a banquet; to attend an official reception /dinner in honour of…; to book a ticket for a theatrical performance; to go on a bus excursion with a guide interpreter; informal/formal dress at a conference dinner; to provide refreshments; to provide transport facilities for cultural events.
