Read the passage to find the answers to the questions that follow. While reading, do not worry about anything except the answers you need to find.

1) When one is at a research institution for the first time, what facts about it would be proper to mention?

2) How can a powerful research centre be characterized?

3) How much important is international collaboration in science and technology?

Given the present-day unprecedented pace of scientific and technological development, a modern research centre should be a dynamic, interactive and technologically innovative facility. It must offer a stimulating environment with significant computational and intellectual resources in which to conduct collaborative and independent research. Inviting young minds, with their desire to an original approach to traditional things, and at the same time fostering fundamental studies, a research institution is sure to remain in the forefront of modern science.

If you happen to receive foreign guests at your institute (laboratory /research centre), what are the words to address them? You may say the following:

It is a great honour for this institution to receive here scientists who have made a great contribution to scientific knowledge in their field. I have no doubt that the interchange of ideas during your visit will prove to be fruitful and beneficial to both sides.

You are at this institute for the first time, so I’d like to say a few words about it.

To begin with, the academic traditions of the institute could be traced back to 1956, when it was founded with academician N. at its head. Today, the institute has more than 2.000 research scientists, technicians and supporting personnel who utilize the laboratory and pilot plant facilities in search of scientific truth. The result of this joint effort is significant – a number of patent inventions, some groundbreaking discoveries, innovative experimental techniques, and a vast body of scientific knowledge. So it would be accurate to describe this institution as a powerful organization.

The various objectives of the institute include practical application of its scientific discoveries, research and development schemes, and professional training. There are plans for further construction of scientific facilities. The institute maintains a research library and publishes a journal.

It should be noted that the institute is contributing to scientific progress by making numerous discoveries, of which not a few are certainly important. The really noteworthy ones are well known and have made their authors famous not only in this country but also beyond its borders. Among our scientists are eminent men with remarkable achievements to their names. They have won State Prizes for their outstanding contributions to science. Some of them are also decorated with international awards in recognition of their effort.

And to conclude, the international links of the institute ensure its active participation in the progress of science worldwide. I’d like to stress that this is a desirable situation for it is the universal language of science and technology that knows no international barriers and leads to the good, plentiful, and peaceful life for the benefit of mankind.
