Problems of translation proper names

The function of a proper name in a literary text

The proper name in a literary text works as a system of unity which is inseparably connected with the plot of the narrative, and personal prerequisites of the author. Tasks that perform Onim in literature are important and varied. Function names are as follows:

1) communicative (reported);

2) appellative (conscription);

3) ekskursivnaya (expressive);

4) deictic (pointer) [Chevpetsova, 1989]

It is this versatility of proper names and allows them both to form their own system and become an integral part of other systems, separate work or a series of works. In this case, we are talking primarily about creating imagery names and denomination. In most cases, this function is performed anthroponomy, but often the authors resort to other types of proper names with the aim to give the recipient of the text more complete understanding of the subject of the question. For example, Khazanov in one of his humorous sketches used placename village Gadyukino to give greater emphasis to dullness and unattractiveness of the village, thus giving the entire work an extra satirical tone.

Created images, usually intertwined with the basic structure of the artistic text, becoming one of its equal parts. Names own personal chosen by the author in order to emphasize certain features of characters, historical era, the socio-cultural environment, family circumstances characters, and others. Other proper names are used to a smaller range of goals, but also affect the overall perception of the text, because it could help created a unique flavor of the work or of the artistic universe. Thus, E.R.Burroughs in his fantasy cycle of Mars, often resorts to his fictional Martian language, which itself is a planet called Barsoom, where "bar» is "eight" and "Sum " is planet, as the residents of Mars thought that was the eighth planet from the sun. In the same course, and uses John. R. R. Tolkien's trilogy "The Lord of the Rings", naming a variety of terrain, as well as parties and events inherent to these areas and living on their territory people’s names that match the language of their inhabitants: elf, hobbit, Dwarves, and so on.

Again referring to personal names, both to the class to popular proper names, it should be noted that, in contrast to the pronounced color transfer, the author sometimes deliberately gives his characters the names, nothing distinguishes them from many other characters wearing similar, simpler names. You can turn again to the cycle of E.R.Burroughs, the protagonist of many books in which the name is John Carter. The name of the character in the world - his home planet - it was quite commonplace, and the hero he is quite consistent, being a veteran of the American Revolutionary War, North and South without any rewards or decals. However, once on Mars, it becomes unique in its kind, and the same at the same time getting his name, unusual for the ear of the Martians. Thus, naming purposeful character "simple" It is here that allows the reader to feel all the difference between planets and their inhabitants. In other cases, the author gives the heroes of their works lackluster name just then, to emphasize their general plainness. So arrives Lermontov in his novel "Hero of Our Time", named one of the minor characters Maxim Maksimych - even without names, further simplifying its essence. In fact, the hero is a very thoughtful person, but with a simple soul, which is reflected in its name.

Wem should also pay attention to the semiotic properties of proper names, that is the perception of the name as a mark of its own. In this regard, the most important aspect seems to us a sign of zero: the absence of any IP in the literary text. In this way it dehumanizes the author of the text and removes the reader from the perception of the work as an artistic, artificial, and making believe in its versatility. Without mentioning any personal name, and using only personal pronouns, the author makes it possible to project the events that occur in the product, the real world, taking the limitations of the mind at the sight of any IP. It is significant in relation to the above thesis backbone functions Onim: proper names attached to artistic text specifics and integrate all of the events and characters in the story in a separate complex structure, while their absence causes the reader a sense of uncertainty in time and space is happening.
