1 Introduction

In this text we will take you on a journey through the construction process of a house, bearing corrosion in mind.
We'll start with what to consider when designing a house bearing corrosion in mind, then we'll provide you with an overview of how you can protect steel against corrosion in already existing houses and finally what to do when you need to renovate your home.

We make a case for the use of steel used in conventional building processes. Due to the inherent strength of the material significant gains can be made in living space and occupied space by the building.

Steel has become a keystone of our built environment, as it can be renewed or completely recycled.

Steel and other iron compounds can prove to be a very effective and solid building material however depending on the environment in which the building will stand certain protective measures have to be taken.

We can all understand that the impact of the weather on steel structures in an area close to the sea can be quite different than if we would observe steel structures in a more dry inland environment.

As we will see, further on in this document we define the environment as not only the immediate area in which the building is located, but also on a much smaller scale; the immediate environment around for example rebar in reinforced concrete.

Also the placement of the steel structure within the building itself will have an impact on the corrosion rate.

More protective places, such as steel cast in concrete forming reinforced concrete, will provide more protection against corrosion than steel structures placed in more exposed places, such as a balcony railing which is obviously exposed to all the elements.

Design of steel construction on residential buildings

Starting with the procurement stage it is essential to choose suitable type and quality of steel needed for construction since manufacturer's and contractor's experiences and form of product will influence not only durability of building, but also rapidity of installation.

It is important to consider, that through using Building Information Modelling systems design team, contractor and suppliers specialist can exchange data while designing and drawing a project. Using this systems the specialist supplier creates the light steel structures in the same time with overall building design and after that accomplishes the site installation.

Steel-framing structures allow large column free areas and reduce minimum depth of floor construction.

Moreover, smaller foundations can be designed for steel construction buildings than for similar concrete options. The supporting columns in steel-structure buildings are relatively small and could be easily enclosed into walls. (2) Figure 1 illustrates various structural steel shapes.

Due to its simplicity and adaptability, setting and maintenance of steel constructions are highly safe areas for all members of working team throughout construction. Simple connections and fixing arrangement allow to repair or implement new services into floors or ceilings during the whole lifetime of a building. Also new facilities or even floors can be integrated in construction by incorporating them into the supporting steelwork. Overall, steel construction buildings are flexible, durable, long lasting and easily adaptable for changing services or building use at all. (2)
