Some practical matters

For the majority of camps volunteers have to bring sleeping bag, work clothes and gloves, summer clothes and swimming suit, but also warm clothes and rain-gear as weather in Latvia is very changeable and really unpredictable. Our volunteers can be accommodated in clubs, schools or tents. It is vital to have a mosquito cream. Volunteers are also asked to bring information about their country, photos, music, games, musical instruments, etc.

PROJECT

Aizdzire Manor is a collection of buildings, ruins, and a park that once formed the Aizdzire estate. It is located close to the city of Kandava in Courland, Latvia. Over the past decades, the buildings have been exposed to decay and destruction, and the park has become a wilderness.

Aizdzire Manor is a piece of valuable cultural heritage. We want to conserve it and step by step fill it with new life. As “the journey is just as important as the goal”, the conservation activities themselves are to be an attraction already.

We pursue an approach of social entrepreneurship, combining the saving of the historical architecture and the development of new perspectives for the old buildings with providing an educational value and an inspiring (inter)cultural experience to the project participants as well as creating added value for the society in general.

WORK

This year, a number of activities will be carried out that is aimed at preparing the place for reconstruction in the following years, such as removal of plants and garbage from buildings and building ruins as well as cleaning and maintenance of garden and park; simple construction activities will take place depending on the level of expertise that the volunteers have.

ACCOMMODATION & FOOD

Volunteers will live in apartments and rooms in the city of Kandava; if the number of participants exceeds the number of places available, additional accommodation in tents will be provided. Please bring sleeping bag and air mattress if you have. Main meals will be prepared by the participants together to enhance the group experience, costs for meals are covered by the admittance fee.

LOCATION

Kandava is a small city with a charming and partially renovated historical center. It is located about half way between Riga and Ventspils. Project location is Aizdzires Muiža, Kandavas pag., LV-3120.

TERMINAL

Arrival terminals are Riga international airport or Riga international bus station. YOUTH FOR SMILE will help to find accommodation in Riga before and after the project.

Busses from Riga to Kandava go in average about once per hour, bus lines are 7938, 7955 and 7948.

LEISURE TIME

The onsite maintenance activities are accompanied by a colorful program of educational, cultural and spare time activities, such as foreign language workshops (Latvian and German), excursions, and lectures.
