Methods for team building.

Importance of coaches as teachers and leaders.

Coach can be an important person in athlete’s life. By working with children he is supposed to be an example for the them. If you make a good impression on them, it will definitely have an impact.

If you are a coach of a college team and you are disciplined and passionate about your work, it will translate to your players without a doubt. After playing for you they will notice that they still keep following your philosophy not only on the court, but off the court as well. Also some children might have a single parent (mother), in this case you are a father-figure for them. They look at you and think that’s how a real man should act like.

Coach is a role model for his players and staff, he should reflect excellence.

The value and methods of setting team goals.

Setting a goal is important not only for a team, but for an individual as well. If you don’t set any goal, you will barely see any progress. There are some criteria for goals, they should be S.M.A.R.T. (Specific, Measurable, Adjustable, Realistic, Time-based). Goals should be positive, written and imagery. It doesn’t matter what you want to achieve as a coach, but you should imbue to your players and staff that your goal is real to achieve. When they believe in it, they will be ready to dedicate themselves to it.

To make your team believe in your goal, you should have meetings with them: before the season, in season and after the season. First three meetings are extremely important, because they are like building blocks for the season. On the first meeting you should educate your athletes regarding importance of goals and establish a common goal. On the second meeting you should create a team profile as well as let athletes rate the team (you should also rate the team). The third meeting is when you and your team begin to find the ways to achieve the goal. In order to get good results continue to have follow-up meetings with the team throughout the season.

Relationships with parents.

The main principle in establishing and maintaining relationships with parents is to keep them business-like, more professional. You shouldn’t pay attention to them during the games as well as you shouldn’t talk with them before and after the games. In their turn, they have to learn that to talk with a coach before or after the game, especially about something they didn’t like, is not a good idea. If parents want to watch their children’s practices, you can allow them to attend your workouts, but only if they won’t interrupt it. You would better not talk with parents about their child’s playing time and compare him to another player on the team who plays more. At the same time, you can talk with their son or daughter if he is willing to learn what should be done in order to get on the court.

Methods for team building.

1. Setting a common goal. Then everybody will do their best.

2. Promoting interdependency. Each person needs to know what he or she is going to contribute and also how what they contribute fits into the "big picture".

3. Stressing team goal. Remind what the goal is and what their choice was in order to achieve it.

4. Being a role model. It is easier for players to follow the coach’s philosophy, if he does everything that he believes in.

5. Developing mutual trust. Players should trust each other and know that they are trusted in return.
