Unusual Hobbies

English, No. 4, p. 33

Exonumia

Elongated coins are coins that have been elongated (flattened or stretched) and embossed with a new design with the purpose of creating a commemorative or souvenir token. The collecting of elongated coins is a branch of numismatics. Elongated coins are also categorized as exonumia.

The hobby of collecting elongated coins (token coins) has expanded throughout the United States and the world. Most modern coin elongating machines can be found in museums or landmark gift shops, souvenir stores, zoos, amusement parks and other locations of this kind. Private engravers make special-issue elongated coins to commemorate historical events, personal landmarks (such as marriage or birth of a child), or other events warranting celebration. They also design elongated coins for private clubs and organizations.

Noodling

Noodling is the act of fishing, specifically for catfish, but only using your bare hands (or feet) to catch them…

The ‘noodler’ will catch the flathead catfish by sticking his arm into their hiding place (or ‘hole’) and entice it to react defensively and attack with its mouth. The noodler’s hand, once inside the mouth of the catfish, will hold it through the gills and lift it out of the water. Just look at that picture again. Tight lines…

Lockpicking

Lockpicking or Locksport involves the recreational studying of, and learning to defeat, locking systems.

The easiest way to think of this is like a knitting circle, but with locks. Lockpickers get together to trade secrets and techniques on how to defeat locking mechanisms. In a typical meet-up, challenges will be set-up to test and improve upon key skills, for instance lock relay races and timed cracks of mechanisms from different types of locks. It looks like great fun and provides an adreline rush without having to jump out of a plane.

Do be careful with this and pick your locks carefully. Bear in mind breaking into locks that aren’t yours is probably a criminal offence – wherever you live!

Tiny/Microscopic Sculpting

Williard Wigan an artist from the United Kingdom is able to create sculptures so small they can fit in the easily into the eye of a needle or on the head of a pin. With the assistance of a microscope he has turned what was initially a hobby into a multi-million dollar career.

Wigan has said himself that it is possible for him to take it down to 5 microns, which would be the tip of a human hair. For now though he primarily creates figures each from a grain of said carving them out with specialized tool looking through a microscope. He uses a small hair from a dead fly as a paint brush. He has said that he must make strokes between heartbeats and during beats his hands can't steadily apply the paint.

Wigan is said to have sold his collection made before 2008 for 20 million dollars to a private collector.

Another honorable mention in this category goes to Dalton Ghetti who without the aid of a magnifying glass sculpts small works of art on the head of a pencil. Ghetti has been doing this for more than two decades. His sculpture include a tiny saw, mailbox, chain links, screw nail, chair, elvis, a boot, linked hearts, etc.

Tape Art

Whether it be duct tape or masking tape you can make very complex pieces of art from tape. Some people have patterned cars with duct tape others create complex sculpture looking structure and model buildings. So if you have a lot of free time and a lot of free tape this could be your hobby.

Taphophilia

Taphophilia is the attraction to cemeteries. These hobbyists enjoy filming and photographing cemeteries and grave stones. They also enjoy rubbing old stones and thus testing the texture. Granted it is a little on the unusual side but as long as you don't tamper with anything wheres the harm in it?

Cryptozoology

Cryptozoology involves spending your time following info on or attempting to track down animals that have not been proven to exist. Primarily people of this group of hobbyists choose subjects such as bigfoot or the Lochness monster as their main focus but many other creatures are being pursued.

UFO Spotting

Anything that leans towards the extraterrestrial side of the universe, fascinates me and I'm sure thousands of others out there. The controversies and the cover-up are gripping, making us want to know so much more. A lot of people claim to have been witness to an alien sighting or have tales of being abducted by a foreign species. The ongoing and unending series of the X-files had me hooked since I was a kid, and I'm sure that you as much as anyone else who is just as interested - is dying to spot one of these illuminated disk shapes in the sky. Read through some books or browse through the web, and find out about places that have a maximum number of sightings. Get a good pair of binoculars and a video camera to record anything that you may spot.
