3. a) Read about Cliff Schimmels and focus on the three main points:

1) what facts or events impressed you most of all;

2) what are the works of Schimmels noted for;

3) what teaching strategies can you get acquainted with reading Schimmels’ books.

Cliff Schimmels grew up near Weatheart. He smelled the red earth, watched the wheat grow, ate at the local cafes, went to school with Vince Bennalis, and fell in love with the simplicity of rural life. After his schooling he went to a place near Weatheart, Oklahoma as a pastor and then as a teacher.

Since 1974, Dr. Schimmels has been Professor of Education at Wheaton College. He is the author of Books on education including “How to Help Your Child Survive”, “Thrive in the Public schools”, “Teaching that Works”, “Rivals of Spring”. In his “Men I’d Like to Meet” Schimmels writes about 26 men in the Bible. His sparkling writing makes them seem like our contemporaries. Each man is spotlighted because he demonstrated a strong character trait that Christian men should exhibit today. This highly readable book inspires as well as entertains.

In 1992 Dr. Schimmels has been a guest professor at the Kyiv State Linguistic University training students and lecturing the faculty of the English Language Department. In his lectures professor Schimmels has taken a look at teaching strategies on the example of how Jesus teaches from Matthew 16.

Jesus asked the disciples two questions, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" and "Who do you say I am?" Schimmels calls the first question, the reporting question. It is designed to get students talking. There are no wrong answers, it is solely based on what the student has heard or seen. This allows the students to process information, share and build confidence. The next question is the penetrating question. This question allows them to dig deeply and take all the information and discover their own perspective and beliefs. Too often, teachers try to go straight to the penetrating questions and neglect to ask the reporting questions.
