On the first Monday in August a general meeting was called in the main library. Everybody was quiet and sad. Oliver Lambert gave a speech, looking at the pictures of M. Kaminski and J. Hodge. He told the firm would never forget them, and take care of the widows and children.

After the speech Mitch went overlook at the pictures. There were three others on the wall. One was woman: “Alice Knaus, 1948-1977”. He heard about her: the only woman ever to become a member of the firm, she was killed in the crash car just there years after joining. The other two pictures were Robert Lamm and John Mickel. He asked Avery about them. Lamm didn’t return. He was eventually found with a bullet in his head. Five dead lawyers in 15 years. It was a dangerous place to work.

Mitch was always the first to arrive at work. The partners were delighted with his progress and rewarded him with extra money. Abby got a job as a teacher at a local school. Mitch’s ability to work long hours was already a legend. But Abby didn’t want to live with a legend; she wished a flesh-and blood person next to her.

Recently Mitch started having his lunch in a small café. It was a dark hole with bad food. He liked it, because he could sit quietly and read legal documents whilehe ate. One day a stranger approached to him.

The stranger said, “You’re McDeere?” Mitch studied him. “Yeah. Who are you?”

The man pulled a badge from his pocket. “Wayane Terrence from FBI” He waited for reaction.

“Sit down” Mitch said.“Thanks” Terrence sat down and said, “I heard you were the new man at Bendini” “Why would that interest of FBI?”

“We watch the firm closely.” He continued, “I can’t tell you a lot at the moment, but I came to warn you about the firm.”

“I am listening,” Mitch said.

“Three things. First, don’t trust anyone. Second, every word you say at home or in the office is probably being recorded.”

“And the third thing?” he asked.

“Money doesn’t grow on trees.” “What do you mean?”

“I can’t say more now. I think you and I actually will become very close. I indeed want you to trust you. I must earn your trust. We can’t meet at your office or at mine, we can’t talk on the phone. So, sometimes I’ll come and find you. Now, here’s my phone number. But call me only from a pay phone.” Mitch put it into the pocket.

“Probably there is one more thing. You’d better know that Hodge and Kaminski deaths were not accidental” said he and left before Mitch could ask any more questions.
