Foods That Do Not Freeze Well

Because of their texture or composition, some food products do not freeze well. While freezing will keep them from spoiling or becoming unsafe to eat, their quality after freezing and thawing may not be acceptable.

*Fruits or vegetables with high water content do not freeze well. These include lettuce and other salad greens, green onions, radishes, tomatoes, watermelon, citrus fruit sections and cucumbers. You can freeze some of these foods, like tomatoes, for use in cooked dishes but: they are not like fresh tomatoes when thawed.

*Sauces and gravies thickened with flour or cornstarch may separate and break down when frozen.

*Mayonnaise, yogurt and sour cream break down when frozen.

*Well-done pastas will be too soft upon reheating; undercook pastas intended for freezing.

* Cooked chunks of potato become soggy or gritty, but mashed potatoes or twice-baked potatoes freeze well.

Exercise 9. Getting a Physical

A. Have you had a physical exam in this country or in any other country? What do you remember about what the doctor did?

B. Read and translate the texts.

The Physical Exam. Medline Plus, a service of the national library of medicine, defines a physical examination as studying the patient's body to determine the presence or absence of physical problems. An exam includes inspection (looking), palpation (feeling), auscultation (listening), and percussion (producing sounds).

Why Have a Physical Exam? Your body requires preventive maintenance. Ask your group to name things that can be accomplished by getting a physical exam even though you are not sick. Try to hit the following points:

· You establish a relationship with a doctor who will accept you as a patient when you are sick.

· The doctor gets a picture of your health that serves as a base for future patient care.

· The doctor can assess your risk of future medical problems.

· The doctor can detect a disease or problem in its early stages.

· The doctor can update your vaccinations.

· The doctor encourages/teaches healthy lifestyle changes.

· You can ask questions.

What Does the Doctor Examine? The doctor looks inside the ears and nose with an instrument. He/she presses on the neck, looks into the mouth and eyes, listens to the heart with an instrument, taps on the back, listens to the breathing with an instrument, etc.

What Should I Do Before a Physical Exam? Before going to see a doctor, you should do the following:

· write down all you can remember about your own and your family’s medical history,

· put any medications that you take into a bag and take them with you,

· write down any questions you want to ask the doctor,

· inform the doctor’s office if you will need to bring any interpreter.

C. Write a health biography about yourself. When did you last see a doctor? What illnesses have you had in your life? Have you ever been to hospital? What ailments and illnesses do your parents have? Do you have any special health care worries?
